Lions Roar Past Softball on Thursday

COMMERCE, Texas – Texas A&M-Commerce used some quality pitching to get out of a few jams, along with timely hitting to defeat the Western New Mexico University softball team 11-1 in five innings and 9-0 in six innings Thursday in Lone Star Conference action.

Texas A&M-Commerce (28-15, 13-10 LSC) opened the first inning strong plating seven runs on seven hits. WNMU (1-39, 0-23 LSC) got on the board in the second. With two outs, redshirt sophomore Brooklyn Misenhimer (Tucson, AZ/Sahuaro) and sophomore Deidre Vega (Bayard, NM/Cobre) each walked and then a single by junior Aryana Gutierrez (Glendale, AZ/Deer Valley) loaded the bases. Senior Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) brought home the run as she was hit-by-pitch on a full-count to bring in Misenhimer to leave the Lions in front 7-1.

TAMUC quickly got that run back and more in the home half of the inning scoring four runs to open an 11-1 lead. WNMU was limited to one hit over the next three innings before the Lions took the run-rule victory.

TAMUC outhit WNMU 10-3 with junior Valeria Luna (El Paso, TX/Irvin), junior Mariangela Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View) and Gutierrez recording the hits. Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) had the only RBI. The Lions were paced by Mariah Jameyson, Chealsea Slider and Ciera Nunez as each posted two hits. Jameyson drove in three RBI.

In the circle, Kinsie Hebler picked up the win (9-2) for TAMUC going four innings and allowing one earned run. Katie Dean tossed the final inning and allowed one run. Redshirt senior Domi Shone (Gold Canyon, AZ/Mesquite) started and went the first inning-plus and ended up with the loss (0-15) giving up nine earned runs. Freshman Thalia O'Neill (Bloomfield, NM/Bloomfield) went the final three innings and allowed just one earned run, while adding a strikeout.

In game two, the Lady Mustangs had a chance to strike right away in the first inning. Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) walked and after two outs, senior Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) doubled to put runners on second and third before a ground out ended the frame.
The Lions put two runs up on the board in the second when Jordyn Sharp tripled to left-center to score a pair of runs for a 2-0 lead after two.

Gutierrez opened the third inning for WNMU with a single and then Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) again reached on a hit-by-pitch. Luna advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. A strikeout followed for the second out and after Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) walked to load the bases, a ground out to shortstop ended the threat.

The Lady Mustangs had two runners on in the fifth when Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) singled and Garcia walked, but a fielder's choice out and line out ended the inning. TAMUC got the offense going in the next two innings, plating three in the fifth and then four more in the sixth, including a walk-off two-run homer by Jameyson to give the Lions a 9-0 victory in six innings.

TAMUC outhit WNMU 8-4 with Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad), Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad), Vega and Gutierrez tallying the hits. Kinsie Hebler and Sharp had two hits apiece to lead the Lions, while Hebler drove in three.

In the circle, Hebler went the first 2.2 innings and allowed two hits and three walks. Dean came on in relief and grabbed the win (11-5) going 3.1 innings and giving up just two hits and two walks. Freshman Lyana Waddell (Winkelman, AZ/San Manuel) went the first 5.1 innings for WNMU and ended up with the loss (1-15) allowing eight earned runs. O'Neill came on in relief and faced just one batter which was Jameyson who ended the game.

The two teams will play another doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. Central Time. The second game of the day will count only as a non-conference contest.
