Softball Finally Returns Home to Host Tarleton State

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Following three straight weeks on the road, the Western New Mexico University softball team will be happy to finally be back home this weekend when they host Tarleton State on Friday and Saturday.

WNMU (1-27, 0-12 LSC) picked up their first win of the season this past Saturday splitting with Embry Riddle as the Lady Mustangs won the first game 8-5. Four Lady Mustangs are hitting over .300 led by a .361 average from sophomore Yasmeen Gastelum (Phoenix, AZ/Pinnacle). Senior Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) adds a .353 average and leads the team in home runs (2) and RBI (19). Junior Mariangela Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View) holds a .329 average with a home run and 12 RBI, while senior Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) has a .326 average with a home run and 10 RBI. Garcia leads the team in doubles with 10 which ranks her fourth in the Lone Star Conference and 21st nationally. She is third in the conference in doubles per game (0.36). WNMU is hitting .274 as a team and are allowing a .327 clip.

In the circle, redshirt senior Domi Shone (Gold Canyon, AZ/Mesquite) continues to lead the team in ERA (5.95), innings pitched (82.1) and strikeouts (39) despite not playing the past two weeks. Freshman Lyana Waddell (Winkelman, AZ/San Manuel) picked up the first win of the season for WNMU as she leads the team in appearances (20) and is tied with Shone in complete games with three. She has tossed 52.2 innings this year. Freshman Thailia O'Neill has also seen time logging 33 innings in 11 appearances.
In the conference, WNMU ranks third in double plays per game (0.39), 54th nationally and seventh in doubles per game (1.21).

Tarleton State is 2-13 on the season and 9-7 in the LSC as they recently took two of three from Texas A&M-Kingsville this past weekend. They are 4-5 away from home in true road contests this year. The TexAnns hit .327 as a team and hold opponents to a .239 clip as Nyka Wood leads the way with a .440 batting average, three home runs and 41 RBI. Maddie Quintanar is also hitting over .400 at .424. Tarleton State has eight players hitting over .300 and six see regular playing time.

In the circle, Haley Freyman has a 2.33 ERA with a 10-5 record in 108 innings. Jordan Withrow adds a 6-5 record in 71 innings and a 2.66 ERA.

The two teams will play doubleheaders both Friday and Saturday, with the action starting on Friday at noon and then on Saturday at 11 a.m.
