Rally Against Cavaliers Falls Short as Softball Plays Two at the DSU Easton Classic

ST. GEORGE, Utah – Facing yet another tough team to open the day, the Western New Mexico University softball team fell to Western Washington 8-0, but then showed fight in the nightcap against Concordia (Ore.). After falling down by six early, the Lady Mustangs got back to within one before coming up just short 8-6 during the first day of the Dixie State University Easton Classic Tournament.

Western Washington (6-2) got off to a quick start scoring six runs over the first three innings to build a 6-0 lead. WNMU (0-9) threatened in the third inning. Sophomore Deidre Vega (Bayard, NM/Cobre) walked on a full-count and after two straight outs, junior Valeria Luna (El Paso, TX/Irvin) reached on an error by the shortstop. Junior Mariangela Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View) followed by working her way on with a full-count walk to load the bases. But, a pop out to the next at-bat ended the threat and the inning.

The Lady Mustangs tallied a hit in the fifth and got another runner on in the seventh, but weren't able to break through. The Vikings finished their scoring with a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to take the 8-0 victory.

Western Washington held the 16-2 edge on hits, while the Vikings committed the only error of the contest. Senior Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) and junior Aryana Gutierrez (Glendale, AZ/Deer Valley) tallied the hits for WNMU. Western Washington was led offensively by a 4-4 game from Emily Benson, as she drove in four runs. Mackenzie Palmer added three hits.

In the circle, redshirt senior Domi Shone (Gold Canyon, AZ/Mesquite) started and went the first three innings allowing six earned runs to take the loss (0-5). Freshman Thailia O'Neill came on in relief and was strong as she gave up just two earned runs over four innings of work. The Vikings had three pitchers in the game, with Anna Kasner starting and going three innings. Makinlee Sellevold went the next three innings to get the win (2-1).

In the second game of the day, the Lady Mustangs showed resiliency after falling behind early. Concordia (Ore.) tallied three in the first, two in the second and two more in the third to at the time build a 7-1 lead.

WNMU got on the board in the home half of the first inning as Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) walked to open the frame and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and later to third as Garcia reached on an error. Senior Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) singled home her sister on a 1-0 pitch to trim the deficit back to two at 3-1.

Heading into the home half of the third, the Lady Mustangs had work to do trailing 7-1. The offense capitalized on a big error in the inning to plate three runs. The error started the inning with Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) hitting one to shortstop, which was thrown away allowing her to reach. Following a ground out, Garcia walked and then a line out should have ended the inning, but marked just the second out. Sophomore Ariana Maldonado (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola) doubled on a full-count pitch to left to score both Garcia and Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad). Sophomore Carolyn Castillo (Silver City, NM/Silver City) capped the inning with a single through the right side to score Maldonado and leave the Cavaliers with the 7-4 lead after three.

In the next inning, WNMU was ready to strike again. Sophomore Bailey McFarland (El Paso, TX/JM Hanks ) opened the frame with a single on an 0-2 pitch. Gutierrez then walked on four pitches and Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) drove in the first run of the inning when she doubled to left-center. After two outs were recorded, Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) cashed in the second run of the inning as she hit the first pitch through the right side to score Gutierrez and leave the deficit at just one, 7-6. WNMU nearly tied the game on the single by Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad), as Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) was thrown out at home by the right fielder.

The Lady Mustangs nearly took the lead in the fifth as Vega and McFarland each got on via singles and after moving to second and third on a sacrifice bunt, a ground out ended the threat.

It remained 7-6 into the seventh when a fielder's choice with the bases loaded added a run to the Cavaliers lead giving them the 8-6 edge heading into the bottom of the seventh. With their last at-bat, WNMU couldn't mount one last run, as a line out and two strikeouts marked the end of the game to give Concordia (Ore.) the victory.

WNMU outhit Concordia (Ore.) 9-7, with Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) and McFarland tallying two hit games. Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) and Maldonado each drove in two. Bussey, Somers and Zbaraschuk recorded two hits apiece to lead the Cavaliers, while Somers drove in three.

In the circle, freshman Lyana Waddell (Winkelman, AZ/San Manuel) started for WNMU and went the first 1.2 innings and allowed five earned runs to take the loss (0-3). Shone went the final 5.1 innings and kept the Cavaliers in check giving up just three earned runs and added six strikeouts. Boucher started for Concordia (Ore.) and went the first 2.2 innings and gave up just one earned run. Muir tossed the final 4.1 innings and gave up two earned runs.

WNMU will continue the DSU Easton Classic on Friday facing No. 14 Central Washington at 10 a.m. before finishing the day at 3 p.m. against former RMAC foe CSU-Pueblo.
