#21 Angelo State Uses Big First Inning to Get Past Softball

SILVER CITY, N.M. – No. 21 Angelo State University posted 12 runs in the first inning on their way to defeating the Western New Mexico University softball team 22-2 in five innings Friday in Lone Star Conference action.

ASU (14-1, 4-0 LSC) scored 12 runs on seven hits in the first inning and took advantage of an error to build a 12-0 lead with 10 of the runs being unearned.

WNMU (0-15, 0-4 LSC) tallied their first runs in the third. With one out, senior Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) singled and after sophomore Ariana Maldonado (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola) singled, senior Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) delivered a two-out RBI single through the left side. The second run in the inning came home on a ball hit in play by sophomore Carolyn Castillo (Silver City, NM/Silver City) that was misplayed by the shortstop to bring in the run.

The Rambelles closed the scoring with five runs in both the fourth and fifth innings.

ASU held a 19-5 edge on hits, with Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) leading the Lady Mustangs with two hits.

Courtney Barnhill had a big game for the Rambelles as she went 4-4 with six RBI, while five other players recorded two hits.

In the circle, Kenedy Urbany picked up the win for ASU (6-0) as she allowed two runs, one earned on four hits. Morgan Hill went the final two innings and allow a hit and a walk. Freshman Lyana Waddell (Winkelman, AZ/San Manuel) started for WNMU and went two-thirds of the first inning to end up with the loss (0-5) as she allowed eight runs, two earned. Freshman Thailia O'Neill went the final 4.1 innings.

The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon.
