Gutierrez Goes for 30-Plus Again This Season at Mustangs

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Senior Jordan Gutierrez (Albuquerque, NM/Valley ) continues to pile up the 30-point games as she put together her third of the season scoring 32 against Midwestern State. That helped keep the Western New Mexico University women's basketball team close before Midwestern State was able to take the 86-73 Lone Star Conference victory on Saturday.

Gutierrez connected on 10 field goals, four three-pointers and also added five rebounds, five assists and a steal in playing all 40 minutes. Senior Jayla Brown (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista ) and junior Jade Botelho (Honolulu, HI/Iolani ) chipped in 15 points apiece. Sophomore Megan Looney (Phoenix, AZ/Apache Junction ) grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.

In a reversal of the pattern this season, the first quarter ended up being a tough one for WNMU (4-21, 0-18 LSC) with MSU (8-16, 5-13 LSC) using a 28-13 advantage over the first 10 minutes to jump out to the early lead.

Botelho started the game strong hitting the first shot of the game, a three-pointer 12 seconds in. Gutierrez then stepped back and hit her own three-pointer for the 6-0 lead. Botelho kept the lead at six with her jumper in the paint just over a minute in.

Gutierrez kept the Lady Mustangs in front at 10-9 when Midwestern State began to get things going. A 15-0 run followed over the next several minutes to push MSU to a 24-10 lead late in the first quarter. A Gutierrez three-pointer ended the run, but Midwestern State tallied the final four points of the frame for the 28-13 lead.

Still trailing by 15 early in the second quarter, WNMU began to make their own run following a pair from the line by Botelho. Brown then added a three-pointer and after back-to-back baskets by Gutierrez, the Lady Mustangs were on a 9-0 run and back to within six at 30-24.

Just as quickly as WNMU got back into the game, MSU went back on another run to jump the lead back into double-digits. A 10-0 run closed the half and boosted Midwestern State to a 45-28 lead at the break.

It was hard for WNMU to get close in the third quarter, as they were only able to trim the deficit back down to 13 and after Brown closed the quarter with a three, that left MSU with the 62-47 lead entering the final frame.

Brown, junior Keshaun Clark (Avondale, AZ/Agua Fria) and Gutierrez helped put together a quick run early in the fourth quarter to get back to within 10, but that would be as close as they could get with Midwestern State taking the victory.

Four players reached double-figures in scoring for Midwestern State led by 21 points from Whitney Taylor. Avery Queen added 17, Liz Cathcart with 13 and Jennifer Arbuckle added 10. Queen tallied a double-double with 12 rebounds.

WNMU made 27-75 (36) from the field, 9-25 (36) from three and 10-12 (83) at the foul line. Midwestern State countered making 29-63 (46), 5-16 (31) from three and 23-33 (70) at the charity stripe.

WNMU held the edge on points off turnovers (16-8) and second-chance points (13-9), while MSU held the advantage on bench points (26-4), points in the paint (44-22) and fastbreak points (14-7).

WNMU will return home for the final two games of the season as they host Texas A&M-Kingsville on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. before senior day will take place on Saturday at 2 p.m. against nationally-ranked Angelo State.
