Gutierrez Ties Career-High as Lady Mustangs Tally First LSC Win

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Senior Jordan Gutierrez (Albuquerque, NM/Valley ) continues to add to her final campaign with the Lady Mustangs as she tied a career-high going for 36 points against Texas A&M-Kingsville as the Western New Mexico University women's basketball team picked up their first Lone Star Conference victory 75-67 Thursday night.

For Gutierrez, it's the second time this season she's scored 36 doing that at UT Permian Basin back on Dec. 3. She also has two other 30-plus point games this year putting up 32 against both Tarleton State and Midwestern State, both on the road. She remains second in the conference in scoring at 19.2 per game, just behind Kenesha Saygo from Texas Woman's at 19.3 per contest. Gutierrez went 12-28 from the field, 4-13 from three and a perfect 8-8 at the foul line. She also added 10 rebounds, three assists and a steal in playing all 40 minutes.

While Gutierrez had a big night, three other Lady Mustangs (5-21, 1-18 LSC) tallied double-figures in scoring with junior Keshaun Clark (Avondale, AZ/Agua Fria) going for 17, senior Jayla Brown (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista ) with 12 and junior Jade Botelho (Honolulu, HI/Iolani ) with 10. That ended up being the only four players that scored for WNMU.

Texas A&M-Kingsville (12-13, 7-12 LSC) came out ready jumping out to a 10-2 lead three minutes in. After trailing throughout the quarter, WNMU was able to fight back and tie the game at 19 to end the first 10 minutes with Gutierrez hitting a jumper and Clark a three.

Gutierrez and Botelho started the second quarter strong as Gutierrez hit a trey and Botelho a pair from the line for the 24-19 lead. The Javelinas made the second quarter theirs as after holding a 32-30 lead, they closed the final three minutes of the half on an 8-0 run for the 40-30 lead at halftime. TAMK held a 21-11 edge in the second frame.

It was a reversal out of the locker rooms for the Lady Mustangs to start the third quarter. After the Javelinas tallied the first points 12 seconds in to go up 12, WNMU began to dominate play. Botelho and Gutierrez went on a quick 6-0 run to trim the deficit in half.

Still down by two late in the quarter, Clark hit a three and then Gutierrez hit two from the line to push WNMU to a 57-56 lead heading into the final 10 minutes. The Lady Mustangs posted a 27-16 advantage in the quarter.

TAMK took the lead with a basket by Angelica Wilson 33 seconds into the fourth and that ended up being their last lead of the game. The Lady Mustangs refused to let this one slip away with Gutierrez hitting a layup to start a 7-0 run. Clark added another three and Gutierrez finished what she started with two more from the charity stripe for the 64-58 advantage at the 6:44 mark.

The Javelinas made one last run to pull to within five at 70-65 with 3:27 to play, but the Lady Mustangs were able to execute down the stretch for the win. Brown all but assured the team of a win as she was able to catch a tough pass in the corner and turn it into a three for the 73-65 lead. Gutierrez, fittingly, scored the final points of the night, hitting two from the line to provide the final margin and tie her for her career-high in points.

Entering the game Saturday, Gutierrez now has 991 points in her career.

Meesha Wade paced the Javelinas with 17 points, while Kaylee Kana tallied 13 points and nine rebounds. Kaylin Roher was right behind with nine points and eight rebounds.

WNMU made 27-73 (37) from the field, 10-35 (29) from three and 11-12 (92) at the foul line. The Lady Mustangs held a strong edge on three-pointers (10-1) and committed eight less turnovers (19-11). TAMK went 25-60 (42) from the field, 1-8 (13) from three and 16-24 (67) at the foul line.

WNMU held the edge on points off turnovers (16-10), while the Javelinas held the advantage on second-chance points (12-6), bench points (17-0), points in the paint (44-24) and fastbreak points (16-7).

The Lady Mustangs will close the season this Saturday at 2 p.m. against No. 19/No. 24 Angelo State. Senior day will take place after the game and before the men's contest. Angelo State defeated Eastern New Mexico 89-82 earlier tonight.
