Softball Begins to Rally in game Two Against Eastern New Mexico When Play Halted by Darkness

SILVER CITY, N.M. – With darkness setting in, the Western New Mexico University softball team was trying to beat not only Eastern New Mexico, but also sunlight during the second game. The Lady Mustangs got back to within a run and after falling down by two heading into the bottom of the seventh, the game was called with darkness on the field and being unable to play. Eastern New Mexico took the first game 10-2 in six innings and hold an 8-6 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh in game two. Game two will be completed at 11 a.m. tomorrow morning before the third game of the series will start.

In the first game, ENMU (6-9, 1-0 LSC) struck first with a run in the first inning. WNMU (0-12, 0-1 LSC) came back to take the lead with two in the second. Senior Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) singled in the tying run and then sophomore Deidre Vega (Bayard, NM/Cobre) pushed the Lady Mustangs in front with a double to right-center for the 2-1 lead.

After the Greyhounds regained the lead with two in the fourth, they really exploded in the sixth as they scored seven runs to take a 10-2 lead. The Lady Mustangs weren't able to get a run in the home half, thus ending the game due to the run-rule in six innings.

Five Lady Mustangs had a hit in senior Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad), junior Mariangela Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View), Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad), sophomore Carolyn Castillo (Silver City, NM/Silver City) and Vega. Garcia and Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) tallied the runs scored.

ENMU was led by a three-hit game from Errika Burke, she also drove in two runs. Susannah Chandler added two hits and two RBI.

In the circle, Kaylee Rogers went all six innings to get the win (4-4) for ENMU as she allowed two earned runs on five hits. Redshirt senior Domi Shone (Gold Canyon, AZ/Mesquite) started and went the first 5.1 innings to take the loss (0-6) as she allowed eight earned runs. Freshman Thailia O'Neill went the final two-thirds and allowed just one unearned run.

WNMU started strong in game two with junior Valeria Luna (El Paso, TX/Irvin), Garcia and sophomore Ariana Maldonado (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola) all getting on base before Castillo drove a deep shot to left for a double to plate two.

The Lady Mustangs expanded the lead to 3-0 with a run in the second as Garcia doubled home Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) who walked.

ENMU tallied two in the third, just to watch WNMU push the lead back to two with a run in the fourth. Garcia doubled and after a ground out moved her to third, Maldonado plated the run with a single to left for the 4-2 lead.

The Greyhounds got the offense rolling and then some in the fifth. ENMU scored five times on three hits, taking advantage of an error as well to take the 7-4 lead.

WNMU refused to go away. The Lady Mustangs got right back to within a run with two in the sixth. Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) opened the frame with a single and after moving to second on a sacrifice bunt, she came home on a single up the middle by Garcia. With two outs, Maldonado came through with another big hit with two outs as she singled on a 2-0 pitch to left to score Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) to trim the deficit to one at 7-6.

With the sun beginning to go down, it became tough to see. The teams kept playing as long as they could, with the Greyhounds adding a run in the seventh and before the Lady Mustangs were about to bat in the bottom of the seventh when the game was halted due to darkness.

WNMU holds the 9-7 edge on hits with Garcia having a big game going 3-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Maldonado also has a three-hit game and two RBI, while Castillo drove in the other two runs.

ENMU is being led by a two-hit game from Chandler and she has also driven in two runs. Samantha Brockman and Cameron Conrad added two RBI apiece as well.

In the circle, Alyssa Lovato started going the first 1.2 innings giving up three earned runs. Kiana Zerr was strong in relief as she went the next 4.0 innings giving up three earned runs. Rogers, who started the first game, recorded the last out in the sixth. For WNMU, freshman Lyana Waddell (Winkelman, AZ/San Manuel) went the first 4.1 innings and allowed three earned runs. O'Neill went the 2.1 innings giving up four unearned runs before Shone tallied the last out in the seventh.

The teams will start play again at 11 a.m. finishing up game two of the series and then start the third game of the series after.
