Lady Mustangs Begin Seven-Game Road Trip at Tarleton State, Texas A&M-Commerce

STEPHENVILLE/COMMERCE, Texas – The final two Lone Star Conference games of 2017 are upon the Western New Mexico University women's basketball team when they travel to Tarleton State and Texas A&M-Commerce.

The Lady Mustangs (0-7, 0-2 LSC) will play a pair of conference games this week, before three straight non-conference road games in Arizona and then an exhibition on New Year's Eve against New Mexico State will close out the 2017 calendar year. The stretch coming up will have WNMU on the road for seven straight games, as they won't play at Drag's Court until Jan. 6 against Texas Woman's.

WNMU had their chances this past week against both West Texas A&M and UT Permian Basin before both teams pulled away for the win. Junior Ciara Fields (El Paso, TX/El Dorado) and freshman Cassandra Vickery (Tularosa, NM/Tularosa) are each averaging in double-figures with Fields at 10.9 per game and Vickery at 10.6. Vickery has connected on the most three-pointers so far this year with 11. Senior Myla Woods-Brown (Roswell, NM/Roswell) has pulled down a team-best 5.1 rebounds per game and is tied with junior Ashton Carrasco (El Paso, TX/Canutillo) for the block lead with five. Senior Melody McLaughlin (Tucson, AZ/Mountain View) has a team-best 16 steals. McLaughlin ranks second in the conference in steals per game (2.67), good for 53rd nationally and is third in the conference in overall steals.

The Lady Mustangs average 52 points per game and allow 68 points, they make 32 percent from the field and opponents are at 41 percent. As a team in the conference, WNMU ranks third fourth in fewest fouls (125), three-point field goals made (42) and three-point field goals per game (6.0).

Last year's meeting on the road against the two teams in early February Texas A&M-Commerce took a 92-65 win and Tarleton State claimed a 84-70 victory.

First up will be a matchup with the TexAnns who are 3-4 overall and 0-2 in the conference. They fell to both Midwestern State and Cameron on the road this past weekend to open conference action.

Tarleton State is 2-0 at home this season with wins against Western State and St. Mary's. They average nearly 60 points per game and allow 61 points per game, making 37 percent from the field, while opponents are at 43 percent.

Mackenzie Hailey is off to another strong start averaging 16.3 points and 6.7 rebounds per contest. McKinley Bostad (9.6) and Katie Webster (9.1) are close to averaging double-figures.

WNMU and Tarleton State will matchup on Thursday night starting at 5:30 p.m. Central Time.

To close the trip this week, the Lady Mustangs will play the Lions of Texas A&M-Commerce. Texas A&M-Commerce is 4-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play as they defeated Cameron in overtime and fell by just three points to Midwestern State. The Lions are 2-3 at home so far this season. They average 68 points and allow 65 points, making 37 percent from the field and allowing 39 percent.

Three players average in double-figures led by Brianna Wise at 15.3 per game, Artaejah Gay adds 13.5 and Princess Davis at 10.5 per game. Jenna Price is close to averaging a double-double as she leads the team in rebounding at 8.1 per game and adds 8.4 points per contest.

The start time on Saturday was moved up to accommodate the national semifinal football playoff game the Lions are hosting, so WNMU and Texas A&M-Commerce will play at 11 a.m. Central Time.
Live video and stats will be available for both games.
