No. 14 Tarleton State Comes Out Swinging Against Lady Mustangs

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – No. 14 Tarleton State University came out swinging and never looked back as they hit .370 on their way to taking the 3-0 victory (16-25, 16-25, 10-25) over the Western New Mexico University volleyball team Friday in Lone Star Conference action.

The TexAnns (25-5, 17-2 LSC) the outright LSC regular season champs continued their strong season as they hit .359 in the first set and then finished the match hitting .545 in the third to complete the sweep.

Senior Heather Verrill (Barstow, CA/Barstow) had a strong night posting seven kills and a .385 hitting percentage. She also added a block and two digs. Senior Kalie Lyle (Phoenix, AZ/Sandra Day O' Connor) added five and then both senior Alanna Watt (Hague, Saskatchewan/Hague) and sophomore Erin Moss (Honolulu, HI/University Laboratory School) added four kills apiece. Sophomore Cristal Carrizoza (Phoenix, AZ/North) dished out 11 assists and sophomore Bailey Gin (Tucson, AZ/Tucson Magnet) added seven. On defense, senior Ashley Mataele (Laie, HI/Kahuku) had 12 digs.

All-American Hailey Roberts continued her offensive attack with 18 kills and posting a .438 hitting percentage. She also added a double-double with 12 digs. Hannah McManus and Adriana Darthuy added eight kills apiece. All-American setter Jordyn Keamo set the table with 32 assists and added four kills. Adrianna Knutson had 14 digs and McManus added four blocks.

Early on, WNMU (9-18, 9-10 LSC) moved out to a 4-2 lead in the opening set behind a pair of kills from Watt. Verrill and Lyle tallied kills to keep the Lady Mustangs with a 10-9 lead. Following a solo block by redshirt freshman Christiana DuBose (Bowie, MD/Bowie) to pull WNMU back to within two at 15-13, Tarleton State exploded with a 7-0 run to move out to a 22-13 lead. After trading points for a while, the TexAnns ended the set via a service error for the 25-16 first set win.

The second set had a similar start to it with WNMU going on a 4-0 run behind points from Verrill and Watt to take a 4-2 lead. Still in front 5-3 on a kill by senior Kelli McGhiey (Pearl City, HI/Sacred Hearts Academy), the TexAnns reeled off an 11-0 run to suddenly open up a 14-5 advantage. The Lady Mustangs got back to within seven at 18-11 on an attack error, but that would be as close as they could get the rest of the way with Tarleton State grabbing the 25-16 second set win.

Set three had the TexAnns enjoying the early 4-2 lead. After a Watt kill and attack error pulled WNMU to within three at 7-4, Tarleton State went on a 10-2 run to jump out to the 17-6 lead. Verrill tried to bring the Lady Mustangs back into it posting three kills down the stretch, along with a kill by DuBose, but it was too much Tarleton State as they claimed the set at 25-10 to take the match in three.

TSU held the edge in kills (47-25), service aces (8-1), blocks (7-2), assists (41-21) and digs (45-27).

WNMU will return to action tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon when they will face No. 25 Angelo State starting at 2 p.m. Central Time. The Belles rolled to the 3-0 win earlier tonight over Eastern New Mexico.
