Javelinas Come Out Firing Against Lady Mustangs

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The second leg of their three city road trip was a tough one Saturday afternoon for the Western New Mexico University volleyball team as they ran into a hot hitting Texas A&M-Kingsville team that posted a .417 hitting percentage on their way to a 3-0 victory (16-25, 13-25, 18-25) over the Lady Mustangs in Lone Star Conference play.

The Javelinas (16-9, 8-5 LSC) hit at least .342 in every set, including a sizzling .533 in the opening frame. Madison Brabham was nearly unstoppable for Texas A&M-Kingsville as she posted 19 kills to just three errors in 25 chances for a .640 hitting percentage.

The first set went the way of Texas A&M-Kingsville early as after a ball handling error helped WNMU (6-14, 6-6 LSC) tie the set at one, the Javelinas ripped off the next five points to take a 6-1 lead. WNMU fought back to get to within six a few times, but it was too much Texas A&M-Kingsville as they grabbed the first set 25-16.

Seniors Heather Verrill (Barstow, CA/Barstow) and Kalie Lyle (Phoenix, AZ/Sandra Day O' Connor) opened the second set with a double-block. Senior Kelli McGhiey (Pearl City, HI/Sacred Hearts Academy) and junior Aspen Luna (Rota, Spain/Farragut) also added kills to keep the set even at four. Similar to the opening set, the Javelinas responded and took off going on a 12-2 run to open up a massive 16-6 lead. The Lady Mustangs responded with a 4-0 spurt behind points from senior Ashley Mataele (Laie, HI/Kahuku) and two errors by the Javlinas before Texas A&M-Kingsville settled down and finished the set on a 9-3 run for the 25-13 second set win and 2-0 match lead.

The third set was the best of the group for WNMU, as they kept it close through a majority of the set. Lyle helped WNMU knot the set again at 12 on a kill. The Lady Mustangs took a 14-13 advantage following a pair of errors by the Javelinas, but just when it seemed like WNMU was gaining traction, Texas A&M-Kingsville went on a quick 4-0 run for a 17-14 lead. A pair of McGhiey kills had the Lady Mustangs back to within two at 19-17, but it was too much Javelinas. A 6-1 run followed to give them the 25-18 third set win and 3-0 match victory.

Texas A&M-Kingsville tallied 52 kills to 12 errors in 96 chances to hit .417. WNMU answered with 26 kills to 16 errors in 96 chances to hit .104. The Javelinas held the edge in assists (51-22) and digs (46-28), while the teams were tied in service aces (3) and blocks (4).

McGhiey and Lyle led the offense with seven kills apiece with McGhiey hitting .389. Luna added six kills. Sophomore Sophia Mitchell (Katy, TX/Taylor) dished out 11 assists while on defense Mataele had eight digs and both Verrill and Luna had two blocks apiece.

Outside of Brabham's big night for the Javelinas, Shelby Sheets added 12 kills and Lexi Wick with seven. Casey Klobedans added 44 assists, while on defense Courtney Rabius had 18 digs and Haley Hutchinson had two blocks, with one solo.

The final stop of the road swing will come this Monday when WNMU will play at in-state rival Eastern New Mexico starting at 6 p.m. The Greyhounds faced the Javelinas Friday night and fell 3-1.
