Homecoming Game Against #10 Midwestern State on Tap for Football This Saturday

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Riding a two-game winning streak, the Western New Mexico University football team returns home for Homecoming this Saturday at 1:30 p.m. against No. 10 Midwestern State University.

WNMU (2-2, 2-1 LSC) picked up two straight Lone Star victories against Oklahoma Panhandle (44-21) and UT Permian Basin (68-17) piling up points in the process.

As a team, WNMU is averaging 32 points per game and allowing 25.5. They have compiled 1,507 yards of total offense, compared to 1,755 for opponents. Passing touchdowns have been the big weapon for the Mustangs with 11 compared to four on the ground. The other three have been scored with two on special teams and the other a fumble recovery.

Senior Preston Blincoe (El Centro, CA/Imperial) leads the rushing attack going for 153 yards on 35 carries and a score. Freshman DeAndre Williams (Tucson, AZ/Tucson Magnet) is right behind with 119 yards on 22 attempts. Senior quarterback Javia Hall (Dallas, TX/Skyline) is third on the team in rushing with 71 yards on 32 attempts and two touchdowns. Hall had caught fire in the past two-plus games through the air completing 60-102 for 832 yards and 10 touchdowns, averaging 208 yards per contest. In the receiving game, senior Xavier Ayers (Albuquerque, NM/Albuquerque) has hauled in 22 balls for 391 yards and five touchdowns. Three others have at least 100 yards with senior Rodney Lawson (Hayward, CA/Patterson) with 14 catches for 157 and a score, sophomore Henry Norman (Fontana, CA/Henry J. Kaiser) with nine for 104 and redshirt junior Treydonte Hill (Nashville, TN/Cane Ridge) with eight for 128 and four touchdowns.

The defense is led by redshirt junior Dominic Barry (Moreno Valley, CA/Vista Del Lago) who has a team-high 27 tackles, 13 solo, 3.5 tackles for loss, a sack, two passes defended and a forced fumble. Senior Steven Stewart (Fremont, CA/Irvington) is right behind with 24 tackles, 14 solo, along with five tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, an interception and two passes defended. Seniors Leo Marin (Carlsbad, CA/Carlsbad) and Alfonso Wilson (San Diego, CA/Morse) are next on the list with 20 tackles apiece and Marin is tied for Stewart for the team lead in solo stops with 14. Marin also has 1.5 tackles for loss, a half sack, a pass broken up, two forced fumbles and a quarterback hurry. Wilson adds five passes broken up. Sophomore Connor Mowat (Lahaina, HI/Lahainaluna) is tied for the team lead in sacks at 1.5, while junior Ian Davis (Grass Valley, CA/Nevada Union) has a team-best two interceptions.

WNMU moved up several national and LSC categories with their performances over the past few games. The team ranks in the top-five in the LSC in third down conversion percentage (.414), fourth and 60th nationally, fourth down conversion percentage defense (.143), first and 10th, blocked kicks (1), fifth and 65th, blocked punts (1), second and 11th, blocked punts allowed (0), tied for first and 11th, fewest penalties per game (7.00), fifth and 74th, fewest penalty yards (242), third and 72nd, fewest penalty yards per game (60.50), third and 69th, first downs (78), fifth and 87th, fumbles lost (1), first and 11th, fumbles recovered (4), third and 31st, kickoff return defense (19.65), third and 74th, kickoff returns (25.25), second and 22nd, net punting (38.95), first and 14th, passing offense (255.5), fourth and 55th, passing yards allowed (178.5), third and 31st, passing yards per completion (14), second and 40th, punt return defense (4.14), third and 31st, punt returns (15.29), third and 28th, sacks allowed (2.0), fifth and 80th, scoring defense (25.5), fifth and 67th, scoring offense (32), fourth and 62nd, tackles for loss allowed (5.50), third and 49th, team passing efficiency (143.29), third and 45th, team passing efficiency defense (111.38), third and 42nd, time of possession (28:10), fifth and 117th, turnover margin (1.00), second and 23rd, turnovers gained (8), third and 51st, turnovers lost (4), second and 15th and winning percentage (.500), fourth and 64th.

Individually, several of the Mustangs are in the top-five in the conference. Hill is fifth and 78th nationally in combined kick returns (210), Marin is first and 15th in forced fumbles per game (.50), sophomore Collin Grady (Glendora, CA/Glendora), junior Aaron Leauma (San Marcos, CA/Mission Hills) and Mowat are fourth and 31st in fumbles recovered (1), Davis is third and 40th in interceptions per game (0.5), freshman Mazin Khalil (Murrieta, CA/Murrieta Valley) is tied for first in both the conference and nationally with one kickoff return touchdown, Hill is first and 22nd in kickoff returns (30.0), Wilson is third and 79th in passes defended (1.3), Hall is third and 32nd in passing efficiency (153.8), second and 21st in passing touchdowns (10), third and 72nd in passing yards (832), fifth and 81st in passing yards per game (208), fourth and 47th in passing yards per completion (13.87), first and 22nd in points responsible for (72), second and 24th in points responsible for per game (18.0), Wilson is tied for first in the conference and nationally in punt return touchdowns (1), redshirt freshman Tyler Vargas (Ramona, CA/Ramona) is second and 25th in punting (41.3), Ayers is first and 14th in receiving touchdowns (5), Hill is third and 32nd with four, Ayers is first and 28th in receiving yards (391), first and 31st in receiving yards per game (97.8), second and 71st in receptions per game (5.5) and Hall is fifth and 78th in total offense per game (225.8).

It won't be any easy task with No. 10 Midwestern State in town as they are 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the LSC. They are 2-0 away from home with wins over Truman State and Texas A&M-Kingsville. They won this past weekend at home against Oklahoma Panhandle State (42-24). This will be Midwestern's first afternoon game of the season and one of only two on the schedule with the second one coming on the final game of the regular season at home against Eastern New Mexico.

They average 35.0 points per game and allow 24.3. They have piled up 1,349 yards and allowed 1,120. Midwestern State is the opposite of WNMU with 12 of their 14 touchdowns coming on the ground. Vincent Johnson leads the ground attack with 207 yards on 37 carries and eight scores. Adrian Seales adds 31 for 168 and two scores, while quarterback Quade Coward has two rushing scores, along with 153 yards on 26 attempts.

Coward has completed 54-84 for 752 and two touchdowns. Statron Jones has been the main recipient through the air with 208 yards on 13 catches and a score. Breion Evans adds 11 for 107 and Xavier Land has five for 135.

Josh Wydermyer leads the defense with 24 tackles, with 12 coming solo. Sir-Vell Ford has 22 tackles, with 11 coming solo, two interceptions, four passes broken up and a fumble recovery. Darian Childers leads the team in tackles for loss with 2.5 and is tied with Alec DiValerio in sacks with 1.5.
