Box Score 2 CHADRON, Neb. – It was a tough Sunday for the Western New Mexico University softball team against Chadron State College as the Eagles took both games 10-1 in the opener in six innings and then held off a rally by the Lady Mustangs for the 8-6 win in the second game in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
In the first game, WNMU (11-16, 7-5 RMAC) was held to three hits and the only run came late in the contest. CSC (13-9-1, 8-4 RMAC) scored two runs in the third and another in the fifth before exploding for seven in the sixth in to force the run-rule victory.
The Lady Mustangs got their only run in the sixth on a solo home run by sophomore
Mariangela Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View). The Eagles then sealed the win in the home half on a grand slam walk-off by Zoe Humphries.
CSC held a 10-3 edge on hits with Garcia, redshirt freshman
Brooklyn Misenhimer (Tucson, AZ/Sahuaro) and junior
Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) tallying the hits for WNMU. Taylor Bauer powered the Eagles with three hits, while Humphries led with four RBI.
In the circle, Cierra Cosslett went all six innings getting the win (6-4) allowing just one earned run for the Eagles. Redshirt junior
Domi Shone (Gold Canyon, AZ/Mesquite) started for WNMU and took the loss (7-8) going four innings and allowing four runs on six hits. Freshman
Tiana Salazar (Peoria, AZ/Peoria) went the final inning giving up five earned runs.
In the second game, CSC stroke first with three in the second inning. WNMU answered with a pair of runs in the third and fourth to take the lead.
Another home run got the Lady Mustangs on the board in the third when junior
Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) hit a two-run shot to score senior
Alicia Enriquez (Gilbert, AZ/Mesquite) who singled in the at-bat before.
In the fourth, the long ball continued to power the offense with senior
Samantha Munoz (Peoria, AZ/Centennial) connecting on a two-run homer to plate junior
Breanna Aker (El Mirage, AZ/Apollo) who came in earlier in the inning to run for senior Thaliyza Ramirez as she reached via hit-by-pitch.
The 4-3 Lady Mustang lead held up until the fifth when the Eagles went ahead for good. CSC recorded four runs on three hits with the big blow a three-run homer by Aspen Eubanks to give CSC a 7-4 advantage.
An unearned run in the sixth boosted the Eagles lead to 8-4 entering the seventh.
The game was far from over when WNMU made things interesting in the seventh. Munoz singled, then after a double by freshman
Carolyn Castillo (Silver City, NM/Silver City) and single by Enriquez load the bases. A fielder's choice out marked the first out of the inning when Garcia singled to left for the RBI.
Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) brought in the second run of the inning with a fielder's choice groundout and then a strikeout ended the threat with the Eagles hanging on for the win.

Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad), Munoz and Enriquez all posting two hits.
Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) and Munoz each collected two RBI. Courtney Lecher and Eubanks had two-hit games for the Eagles with Eubanks driving in three.
Tayler Hall went the distance to grab the win for the Eagles (6-1) as all six runs were earned. Three pitchers went in the circle for the Lady Mustangs. Senior
MaryJo Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) started and went for the first four innings giving up three earned runs on five hits. Salazar tossed a third of an inning and gave up three runs and took the loss (3-3). Shone went the final 1.2 innings allowing two runs, one earned.
WNMU returns home this coming weekend when they will face in-state rival New Mexico Highlands.
