SILVER CITY, N.M. – Having been on the road for the past two weeks, the Western New Mexico University basketball teams return home to face Colorado Mesa University and Westminster College this weekend.
On the women's side, the Lady Mustangs are 7-13 overall and 5-10 in the RMAC, currently three games back of the eighth and final RMAC Tournament spot. Junior
Jordan Gutierrez (Albuquerque, NM/Valley ) took over the top spot on the team in scoring at 10.0 per contest, just ahead of junior
Desiree Smith (Phoenix, AZ/Tolleson Union )'s 9.9. Gutierrez drilled eight three-pointers against UCCS to tie for sixth all-time in the RMAC record books with 13 other players. Gutierrez also leads the team in three-pointers (40). Smith leads the team in steals (44) and assists (59). Sophomore
Jade Botelho (Honolulu, HI/Iolani ) averages 8.6 points and 5.4 rebounds while leading the team in blocks (8). Junior
Deandra Williams (Rosenburg, TX/Terry ) leads in rebounding at 6.1 per game and also adds 6.1 points. As a team WNMU averages 57.4 points and allows 65.4. They have made 420-1,205 (35) from the field, while opponents have made 484-1,178 (41).
First on Friday night at 5:30 p.m. the Lady Mustangs will face Colorado Mesa. The Mavericks are 12-7 overall and 9-6 in the RMAC, currently in seventh place in the conference standings. Bryanna Adams leads the team in points per game at 17.6, while Sydney Small adds 9.9. They average 65.7 points and allow 57.7. They have made 431-1,098 (39) from the field, while opponents have made 359-999 (36). The Mavericks rolled to a 87-56 win at home over Western State last time out.
WNMU matched up with Colorado Mesa three times last year with the Mavericks taking all three meetings. WNMU fell, 76-66, in the first meeting in Grand Junction, then 64-51 in Silver City before the teams met in the conference tournament in Grand Junction with the Mavericks taking the 57-41 victory.
WNMU will face Westminster on Saturday also at 5:30 p.m. The Griffins are 7-12 overall and 4-11 in the RMAC. Westminster split this past weekend defeating Western State in overtime and taking CSU-Pueblo to the brink before falling by four. Denise Gonzalez leads the way at 10.5 points per game. She also leads in assists (67) and steals (36). Natalie Parsons (9.9) and Aubrie Vale (9.8) are the next two scoring leaders. They average 57.8 points per game and allow 60.9. They have made 400-1,042 (38) from the field while opponents have made 444-1,143 (39).
This will be the first meeting between the two schools.

On the men's side, the Mustangs are 1-19 overall and 1-14 in the RMAC. Freshman
Willie McCray (Clovis, NM/Clovis/Westwind Prep Academy ) still leads the team at 10.7 points per game. He also leads the way in assists (30) and steals (23). Juniors
Emery Range (Grand Rapids, MI/Willow Canyon) and
Steven Loucks (Yuma, AZ/Cibola) each tally 9.7 points per contest. Loucks leads in rebounds at 5.6, followed closely by Range's 5.4. Senior
Makhtar Fall (Morocco/Ecole Al Jabr) leads the team in blocks with 14. Senior
Adam Kesler (Silver City, NM/Silver) has hit a team-best 34 three-pointers. They average 68.4 points per game and allow 81.3. They have made 453-1,202 (38) from the field, while opponents have made 549-1,220 (45).
WNMU opens the weekend on Friday against Colorado Mesa at 7:30 p.m. The Mavericks are 15-6 overall on the season and 11-4 in the RMAC and have won six-straight games. Ryan Stephan remains one of the top players, not only on Colorado Mesa's team, but in the nation. He averages 25.8 points per game and 11.6 rebounds. He also leads the team in blocks with 12. CJ Davis adds 12.8 points, while Eimer Lopez tallies 12.1. They average 83 points, while opponents are at 73.1. They make 600-1,252 (48) from the field, while opponents have made 527-1,276 (41).
The Mavericks took both meetings last year, first in Grand Junction, 82-42, and then in Silver City, 92-66.
To close the week on Saturday also at 7:30 p.m. will be a matchup with Westminster College. The Griffins are 11-8 overall and 7-8 in the RMAC and have won their last three games. Casey Evans leads the way at 13.2 points per game. Zerrion Payton adds 12.8, while Kenny Woodard tallies 10.8 points per contest. Payton grabs down a team-best 6.5 rebounds. They average 72.0 points and allow 72.3. They have made 462-1,041 (44) and opponents have made 454-1,073 (42).
This will be the first meeting between the two schools.
