No. 7 Lady Buffs Lead Throughout in Win Over Women’s Basketball

CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M has been one of the top teams in Division II over the years and they proved why Thursday night when the No. 7 ranked Lady Buffs used a plus-50 advantage inside the paint and shot 67 percent in taking the 100-52 victory over the Western New Mexico University women's basketball team in the Lone Star Conference opener for both teams.

WTAM (6-1, 1-0 LSC) shot 77 percent through the first 20 minutes and then ended up with a 54 percent clip in the second stanza to post a 67 percent sizzling shooting percentage making 38-57. WNMU (4-3, 0-1 LSC) was limited to just a 23 percent shooting clip making 15-66. Points in the paint were definitely one-sided as the Lady Buffs used their size inside to post a 56-6 advantage.

Senior Jordan Gutierrez (Albuquerque, NM/Valley ) led the way with 14 points, making three, three-pointers. Redshirt sophomore Lucy Benning (El Paso, TX/El Paso) came off the bench to fire in nine points.

The Lady Buffs scored the first five points of the game before junior Shoniquia Coleman (Austin, TX/Colony) hit a three-pointer at the 6:38 mark to leave the Lady Mustangs down two. Benning connected on the first of her three, three-pointers at the 5:17 mark to trim the deficit back to five when WTAM closed the first on a 15-6 run for the 26-12 lead through the first 10 minutes.

WNMU got to within 16 a few times in the second quarter, with the last coming with 8:44 to play in the half on a free throw by sophomore Megan Looney (Phoenix, AZ/Apache Junction ). The Lady Buffs controlled play the rest of the half to take a 57-29 lead into the locker rooms.

Junior Jade Botelho (Honolulu, HI/Iolani ) helped start the second half strong with a three-pointer, but just like the other two quarters, it was all WTAM as they built the lead to 88-47 heading into the final quarter.

Only 17 combined points were scored in the fourth, 12 by the Lady Buffs.

Four players scored in double-figures to lead the way for the Lady Buffs as Sydney Walton went for 24 points on a perfect night making 10-10 from the field, 2-2 from three and 2-2 at the line. Alie Decker nearly recorded 20 points settling on 19 as she hit four, three-pointers.

WNMU forced two more turnovers (18-16) than committed and held a slight 22-21 edge on points off turnovers.

The Lady Mustangs continue the road swing as they head to Odessa to face UT Permian Basin on Saturday starting at 2 p.m. (Central Time). The Falcons fell just short in a tight battle with Eastern New Mexico earlier tonight, 63-61.
