Gutierrez Pours in Career-High 36 Points at Falcons

ODESSA, Texas – Senior Jordan Gutierrez (Albuquerque, NM/Valley ) did all she could for the Western New Mexico University women's basketball team scoring a career-high 36 points against UT Permian Basin Saturday afternoon. Despite the strong outing, it wouldn't be enough as a short-handed Lady Mustang squad fell to the Falcons, 75-63, in Lone Star Conference action.

Gutierrez went 14-19 from the field, 5-6 from long range and 3-4 at the charity stripe. If that wasn't enough, she also added five rebounds, two assists and a steal in 38 minutes. Her point total is the highest in the Lone Star Conference this season heading into this weekend and is the third-most points in a single game in all of Division II through last week. Although this was her career-high, Lady Mustang fans have become accustom to big games from Gutierrez as she went for 29 and 28 in a game last year.

On the flip side, she made more than half of the field goals for the team as outside of Gutierrez, WNMU (4-4, 0-2 LSC) went just 12-37 from the field playing without juniors Jeylynn Fields (Casa Grande, AZ/Casa Grande) and R'Trevia Randolph (Red Oak, TX/Red Oak). WNMU as a team, thanks to Gutierrez's hot shooting, shot well making 46 percent (26-56), 7-12 (58) from three and 4-6 (67) at the foul line. The defense limited UTPB (4-4, 1-1 LSC) to just a 26-66 (39) effort from the field, 7-29 (24) from deep and 16-20 (80) at the foul line. Turnovers were big with WNMU committing 24 to 14 for UTPB. Points off turnovers (19-13) and second-chance (16-2) gave the Falcons a big boost.

Gutierrez started her big game right out of the gate dialing long distance just over two minutes in for the 3-0 lead. Sophomore Megan Looney (Phoenix, AZ/Apache Junction ) stretched the lead to five at 7-2 with a layup near the midway point of the first quarter.

WNMU kept the lead at five a couple more times the rest of the quarter before UTPB was able to get a three right before time expired by Sierra LaGrande to tie the game at 13 through the first 10 minutes.

Trailing by six, Gutierrez trimmed the deficit back to three with another triple at the 4:34 mark. She got loose for another long ball at the 4-minute mark of the second quarter to cut the lead back to two at 21-19.

Junior Jade Botelho (Honolulu, HI/Iolani ) connected on a layup with 1:36 to go before halftime to leave the deficit at just three when UTPB closed the half on a 5-0 run to take a 30-22 lead into the locker rooms. The Falcons took advantage of points off turnovers (5-0), second-chance (6-0) and bench points (9-0) in the second quarter.

Gutierrez started the scoring in the second half with a layup before UTPB began to pull away going on an 8-2 run to balloon the lead to 12. WNMU refused to go away with Looney hitting a layup and a three by junior Keshaun Clark (Avondale, AZ/Agua Fria) had the Lady Mustangs back to within seven near the midway point of the third quarter.

UTPB took off the remainder of the third outscoring WNMU by eight the rest of the way to take a 57-42 lead into the final 10 minutes.

The Lady Mustangs made one last run in the fourth quarter, cutting down a 21-point deficit back to 12 after closing the game on a 11-2 run. It was all Gutierrez as she accounted for the final 11 points of the run over the course of two minutes hitting three layups, a pair of free throws and a three-pointer.

Even point distribution powered the Falcons with four players scoring in double-figures led by 13 from Jau'nae Peevy. Peevy nearly had a double-double with seven rebounds.

WNMU will return home this coming week as they will host Tarleton State on Thursday night starting at 5:30 p.m.
