Basketball Teams Close Four-Game Road Swing at UCCS, MSU Denver

COLORADO SPRINGS/DENVER, Colo. – The Western New Mexico University basketball teams will wrap up their four-game road swing this weekend traveling back to Colorado to face the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs and MSU Denver.

On the women's side, WNMU (7-11, 5-8 RMAC) is coming off of a 62-49 victory over Adams State that snapped a four-game losing streak.  Desiree Smith (Phoenix, AZ/Tolleson Union ) remains the main force on offense averaging 10.2 points, along with 40 steals, 57 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 65 field goals. She leads the team in field goals, assists, steals and points. Jordan Gutierrez (Albuquerque, NM/Valley ) is next on the list at 9.4 points per contest. She leads the team in three-pointers with 32 and adds 36 assists and 30 steals. Jade Botelho (Honolulu, HI/Iolani ) is just short of averaging nine points per game at 8.9, she brings down 5.5 rebounds and has a team-high eight blocks. Deandra Williams (Rosenburg, TX/Terry ) continues to lead the team in rebounds at 6.1 per game and also adds 6.1 points.

WNMU averages 57.1 points per game and allows 62.8. They make 35 percent from the floor and allow 40 percent. Nationally, the Lady Mustangs rank in the top-100 in fewest fouls per game (293), 75th and second in the RMAC, fewest turnovers (273), 95th and eighth in the RMAC, personal fouls per game (16.3), 53rd and second in the RMAC, steals (174), 62nd and fourth in the RMAC, steals per game (9.7), 66th and fifth in the RMAC, three point field goal defense (27.8), 37th and third in the RMAC, turnover margin (3.11), 51st and fourth in the RMAC, turnovers forced (18.28), 84th and fourth in the RMAC and turnovers per game (15.2), 79th and seventh in the RMAC.

Smith is in the top-100 nationally in steals (40), 73rd and fourth in the RMAC and steals per game (2.22), 81st and fourth in the RMAC. She also ranks in the top-10 in three other categories in the RMAC including seventh in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.09), fifth in assists (185) and fifth in assists per game (3.2). Gutierrez is in the top-10 in the conference coming in ninth in three point field goals made (32) and eighth in three point field goals per game (1.78).

WNMU will open the week on Friday at UCCS beginning at 5:30 p.m. The Mountain Lions are 13-6 overall and 8-4 in the RMAC and have won their last three games. Brittany Hernandez continues to power UCCS like she did last year leading the team in points per game (20.7) and rebounds per contest (8.0). She also leads the team in blocks with 33. Jen Vigil is also in double-figures scoring at 10.2 points per game. The Mountain Lions average 73.2 points per game and allow 64.8. They make 39 percent from the field and allow 41 percent.

UCCS took both games last year winning the first in Silver City, 74-63 and then a 77-54 win in Colorado Springs.

WNMU will finish the trip on Saturday at 5 p.m. against MSU Denver. The Roadrunners are 7-12 overall and 5-8 in the RMAC. They are currently on a four-game losing streak. Hannah Stipanovich leads the team in points per game (14.2), rebounds (6.4) and field goals (98). Georgia Ohrdorf adds 10.6 points per game and grabs 6.3 rebounds per contest. MSU Denver averages 61.3 points per game and allows 64.3. They make 38 percent from the field and allow 41 percent.

WNMU won in Denver last year, 59-47. It marked the first time the program had won on the road at MSU Denver. The Lady Mustangs have currently won two games in the series.

On the men's side, WNMU (1-17, 1-12 RMAC) nearly claimed a win last time out against Adams State before the Grizzlies rallied for the victory. Willie McCray (Clovis, NM/Clovis/Westwind Prep Academy ) remains on top in terms of scoring averaging 10.6 points per game. He also leads the team in assists (29) and steals (19). Emery Range (Grand Rapids, MI/Willow Canyon) adds 9.7 points per contest, along with 5.4 rebounds. Steven Loucks (Yuma, AZ/Cibola) tallies 8.7 points and Adam Kesler (Silver City, NM/Silver) chips in 8.3 points and leads the team in three-pointers (31). Loucks is also tied with Range for the team lead in rebounds at 5.4. WNMU averages 68.7 points and allows 79.5. They make 38 percent from the field and allow 44 percent.

Nationally, the Mustangs rank 99th in defensive rebounds per game (26.67), which is good for fourth in the RMAC. They also rank in the top-five in the RMAC in blocked shots per game (2.8), fifth, field goal percentage defense (43.7), fourth, steals per game (6.8), fourth, three point field goal defense (35.4), fourth, total steals (123), fifth and turnovers forced (14.50), second.

McCray is nearly in the top-100 nationally in both free throws made and attempted. He is 109th and ninth in the conference in free throws attempted (103) and 120th and 11th in the RMAC in free throws made (74).

WNMU opens the trip on Friday at 7:30 p.m. against UCCS. The Mountain Lions are 11-9 overall and 8-5 in the RMAC. They are currently on a three-game winning streak. Three players average in double-figures in terms of scoring led by Alex Welsh's 20.5 per game. He also leads the team in rebounds (9.2), blocks (16) and field goals (160). Dalton Patten chips in 14.3 points per game and 5.4 rebounds, while Kendall Godley tallies 13.1 points and a team-high 49 assists, tied with Welsh. UCCS averages 81.2 points per game and allows 78. They make 50 percent from the field and allow 44 percent.

UCCS took both matchups last year first in Silver City claiming the 93-73 victory and then in Colorado Springs in a shootout, 103-91.

The Mustangs will close the trip on Saturday night at 7 p.m. versus MSU Denver. The Roadrunners are 11-8 overall and 9-4 in the RMAC. They have won four of their last five games, with three coming by four points or less. Tony Dobbinson leads the team in points averaging 14.6, he also brings in 2.9 rebounds and has connected on 36 three-pointers. Peter Moller is also in double-figures at 11.0. Andre Harris and Bounama Keita are tied for the team lead in rebounds at 5.6. They average 66.2 points and allow 66.5. They make 41 percent from the field and allow 45 percent.

MSU Denver claimed the 85-41 win last year in Denver.
