Football Takes Nation's Leading Passing Attack to Fort Lewis This Saturday

DURANGO, Colo. – Having come close against one of the top teams in the nation, the Western New Mexico University football team sets their sights this week on facing Fort Lewis College on Saturday with kickoff set for noon.

FLC is off to a hot start this season going 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the RMAC. The Skyhawks have piled up blowout victories against both Black Hills State (48-7) and New Mexico Highlands (49-7). This will be their third home game in the past four.

PJ Hall has powered the offense rushing for 400 yards on 89 attempts and four touchdowns. Quarterback Jordan Doyle has added 229 yards rushing on 42 attempts, while Allen Thigpen is also over 100 at 130 on 14 carries and a score. They have 926 yards on the ground, averaging 231.5 per game. In the air, Doyle has completed 51-of-82 for 548 yards and five scores. Thompson has been his main target bringing in 15 passes for 258 yards and three scores.

On defense, Andrew Ike leads the way with 32 tackles, while Ontiveros has 29 stops. OJ Thompson leads in sacks with two, while three have tallied an interception.

Last year, WNMU jumped out to an early 24-0 lead before Fort Lewis came back to within a touchdown when the Mustangs claimed the 24-17 victory.

The Mustangs are 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the RMAC after falling to No. 10 Colorado State Univeristy-Pueblo, 42-27, this past Saturday. Mitch Glasmann (Temecula, CA/Chaparral) broke the RMAC passing TD mark with his four tosses in that game to become the new record holder at 100. He is just 579 yards shy of breaking the passing mark as well.

Glasmann helps lead an offense that has thrown for an average of 401.5 yards per game which is first in the nation. He leads the nation in completions per game (28.25), passing yards (1,588) and passing yards per game (397). He also leads the RMAC in not only each of those categories but in passing yards per completion (14.05) and is second in passing efficiency (149.5) and passing touchdowns (14), which is also third in the nation. Receivers Xavier Ayers (Albuquerque, NM/Albuquerque) and Larry Young II (San Diego, CA/Morse HS) have been on the receiving end of the 113 Glasmann completions so far this season, while Marques Rodgers (Gardena, CA/Serra) is also near the top in receptions. Ayers has brought in 29 passes for 507 yards and a touchdown, which came on an 86-yard toss from Glasmann last week against CSU-Pueblo. Rodgers is second in receptions with 28 going for 258 yards and a touchdown, while Young II has 24 grabs for 385 yards and seven touchdowns. Evan Beebe (Chula Vista, CA/Mater Dei Catholic) has added three touchdowns, while Michael Ball (Rowland Heights, CA/Rowland) and Cole Coffeen (Springerville, AZ/Round Valley) have one each. Rodgers has gone for 479 yards on the ground on 79 attempts and five scores, while Tyler Jackson (San Diego, CA/Ramona HS) has added two touchdowns on eight attempts. On defense, Darius Guillory (Temecula, CA/Chaparral) leads the way with 28 tackles, 16 coming solo, along with a half tackle for loss and a fumble recovery. Don Tyler (Los Angeles, CA/Fairfax) has added 26 tackles and Dominic Barry (Moreno Valley, CA/Vista Del Lago) has 23. Alfonso Wilson (San Diego, CA/Morse) leads in tackles for loss with eight, while he is tied with Johnny Delcoure (Fallbrook, CA/Fallbrook) for the team sack lead as both have two. Juwan Sumpter (Fallbrook, CA/Fallbrook HS) has the only interception so far and also leads in passes broken up (5) and passes defended (6).

Ayers ranks fifth in the nation in receiving yards and first in the RMAC, sixth in the nation and first in the RMAC in terms of receiving yards per game (12.6) and is also first in the RMAC in receptions per game (7.3). Young II is fifth in the nation in both receiving touchdowns and receiving yards, leading the RMAC in TDs and is third in yards. He is also third in the RMAC in terms of receiving yards per game (96.3) and second in scoring (10.5). Rodgers is near the top in several categories as he is sixth in all-purpose yards in the nation and second in the RMAC at 204.25, 20th in receptions per game and second in the RMAC (7.0), 17th in rushing yards (479) and third in the RMAC, 20th in rushing yards per game (119.8) and third in the RMAC and 30th in rushing touchdowns (5) and second in the RMAC.

In addition to leading the RMAC in passing yards per game, WNMU also leads in fumbles recovered (5), passing yards per completion (13.84), tied for first in punt return defense (8.00) and in total offense (523.3), which is ninth in the nation.

Both Xavier Goodloe (Spring Valley, CA/Steele Canyon) and Joe Tito (Las Vegas, NV/Cimarron-Memorial) have forced two fumbles this year putting them in a tie for second in the RMAC. Barry, Avery Crump (Los Angeles, CA/Verbum Dei), Guillory, Curtis Palacio (Los Angeles, CA/Dorsey ) and Wilson all have fumble recoveries this year which also ties all of them for second in the RMAC. Sumpter is 33rd in the nation and second in the RMAC in passes defended per game at 1.5.
