PUEBLO, Colo. – The Western New Mexico University women's tennis team advanced to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament Championship match after defeating MSU Denver, 5-1, in the semifinal round Friday. The men will have to wait until tomorrow before playing their semifinal match.
The Lady Mustangs were just able to get the match in before the rains came postponing the rest of play until tomorrow.
In doubles,
Ganna Tiurina (Kiev, Ukraine/M.M. Gromov #227)/
Annica Betz (Celle, Germany/Kaiserin Auguste Viktoria Gymnasium) opened strong with an 8-4 win at the top flight.
Pauline Emin (Viry, France/Lycee Arbez Carme)/
Claudia Osuna (Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico/Tec Milenio ) added an 8-6 win at No. 3.
Ashley Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado)/
Tiffany Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado ) fell at No. 2, 3-8.
In singles, No. 3 through No. 6 all went in straight sets to WNMU to complete the victory. Emin at No. 5 controlled her match cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 win. Osuna at No. 4 and
Tiffany Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado ) at No. 6 each dropped just three games in their matches before posting wins. Osuna dropped three in the first set before taking that set, 6-3, and then dominating the second set, 6-0. It was reverse for
Tiffany Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado ) as she shut down her first set 6-0 and then took the straight set win, 6-3.
The Lady Mustangs advance to the championship match on Saturday at noon. They will face either Colorado Mesa or Colorado State-Pueblo, as the Lady ThunderWolves held a 4-2 lead before weather postponed that match until 8 a.m. Saturday morning.
The men will face Colorado State-Pueblo at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning. If they win that match they would advance to the championship match at 3 p.m.
