Tennis Teams Open RMAC Tournament This Friday in Pueblo

PUEBLO, Colo. – The Western New Mexico University men's tennis team will look to make it six straight Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament titles when they open the RMAC Tournament this Friday in Pueblo. The Lady Mustangs will look to make it three of the last four years that they have won the RMAC Tournament.

Both teams will be the top seed and will have a bye into the second round. The men will face the winner of Colorado State University-Pueblo/Colorado Christian winner at 5 p.m. Friday, while the women will face the winner of MSU Denver/Montana State-Billings at 2 p.m. on Friday. If the men win, they would advance to the championship match on Saturday at noon against the MSU Denver/Colorado Mesa winner. If the women win, they would advance to the championship match on Saturday at 9 a.m. against the CSU-Pueblo/Colorado Christian or Colorado Mesa.

The men, currently 33rd in the latest ITA national poll, as well as second in the South Central Region, are 11-9 overall and 5-0 in the RMAC. Freshman Vladimir Gnilozubov (Kazakhstan, Astana/Kazakhstan) leads the team in singles victories tallying a 12-7 record. He went 5-0 in RMAC regular season play, with most of his wins coming at No. 5. Senior Alvaro Nunez (Madrid, Spain) is also in double-digit victories in singles play going 10-10 and 5-0 in RMAC with most of his wins coming at No. 4. Sophomore Jean-Laurent Pageault (Perrigny, France/Academi des Hauts de Nimes) and redshirt freshman Tristan Da Lio (Casablanca/Academie des Hauts de Nimes) are next with nine wins apiece. Pageault is 9-9 with most of his wins coming at No. 2 and is 5-0 in RMAC play. Da Lio is also 9-9, with all of his wins coming at No. 3 and he is 3-1 in RMAC play. Senior Juan Pablo Fuentes (Guadalajara, Mexico) has added an 8-9 record and 4-1 in RMAC at the top flight. Freshman Pablo Santibanez (Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico/CETYS Universidad) is 7-8, with his wins split between five and six. He is 3-0 in RMAC play. Senior Omar Lopez (Naucalpan, Mexico) has added a 6-5 record and 3-0 in RMAC play with all of his matches at No. 6.

In doubles play, the duo of Nunez/Fuentes at No. 2 has gone 6-0 and 5-0 in RMAC play. Da Lio/Gnilozubov have added a 6-4 record and also 5-0 in RMAC play with most of their wins coming at No. 1. Pageault/Santibanez at No. 3 have compiled a 6-0 record and 5-0 mark in RMAC play.

On the women's side, the Lady Mustangs are 10-11 overall and 5-0 in RMAC play, currently ranked 10th in the latest ITA South Central Region poll. In singles play, reigning RMAC Academic and Player of the Year senior Ganna Tiurina (Kiev, Ukraine/M.M. Gromov #227) leads the team with a 13-7 overall record and 5-0 in the RMAC at the top flight. She has gone 15-0 in RMAC regular season play the last three years. She is also ranked fifth in the South Central Region by ITA. Senior Pauline Emin (Viry, France/Lycee Arbez Carme) has gone 12-8 and 5-0 in RMAC play with most of her wins coming at No. 5. Junior Claudia Osuna (Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico/Tec Milenio ) has gone 11-6 overall and 5-0 in RMAC play with most of her wins coming at No. 4. Sophomore Tiffany Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado ) is next in wins going 8-11 and 4-1 in RMAC play with her wins coming at No. 6. Sister redshirt junior Ashley Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado) holds a 6-13 overall record and 4-1 in RMAC play with her wins coming at No. 3. Freshman Annica Betz (Celle, Germany/Kaiserin Auguste Viktoria Gymnasium) is 5-14 overall and 2-3 in RMAC play at No. 2. Junior Diamond Morrill (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) has also added a singles win at No. 6.

In doubles play,  Betz/Tiurina at the top flight have gone 8-12 and 4-1 in RMAC play with their matches coming at the top flight. Emin/Osuna have gone 6-2 overall and 5-0 in RMAC play with the wins coming at No. 3. Emin/Ashley Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado), Morrill/Tiffany Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado ), and Morrill/Ashley Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado) all have two wins apiece.

Winners of the RMAC Tournament receive an automatic bid into the NCAA South Central Regional bracket.
