#10 Roadrunners Too Much For Men's Basketball

DENVER, Colo. – Facing the No. 10 ranked team in the nation, the Western New Mexico University men's basketball team tied the game near the midway point of the first half before the Roadrunners pulled away on their way to taking the 85-41 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory Saturday night.

Gavin Wood (Florence, AZ/Florence ) got WNMU (1-11, 1-7 RMAC) on the board nearly two minutes in connecting on a three-pointer to pull the Mustangs to within one at 4-3. Down five at 8-3, Wood drilled another triple and after a block by Terrez Scott (Santa Clarita, CA/Valencia), Steven Loucks (Yuma, AZ/Cibola) converted that into a layup to knot the game at eight.

Following a run by MSU Denver (11-2, 6-1 RMAC), the Mustangs would fight back to within four on a three by Loucks at the 12:03 mark. The Roadrunners would go on a 7-0 run on their way to outscoring WNMU by a score of 30-4 over the remainder of the opening half to take a 46-16 lead into the locker room.

The Roadrunners didn't let up in the second half holding a 39-25 scoring edge in the second stanza for the 85-41 victory.

Wood had a big game going for 18 points, making 6-of-12 from the field all from three-point range. Marcos Castrillo (San Francisco, CA/Pinole Valley) added eight points, while Adam Saenz (Benson, AZ/Benson) led the team in rebounds with eight. Scott dished out a team-high five assists.

Nicholas Kay led MSU Denver and all-scorers with 19 points, as four Roadrunners reached double-figures.

WNMU held an edge from three-point range making seven to four for the Roadrunners while MSU Denver made 50 percent from the field and had a 27-6 advantage at the foul line.

WNMU will remain on the road next week playing at Adams State on Friday night beginning at 7:30 p.m.
