ALAMOSA, Colo. – Despite a 25-point game from
Marcos Castrillo (San Francisco, CA/Pinole Valley), the Western New Mexico University men's basketball team wasn't able to overcome Adams State University as the Grizzlies took the 99-64 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory Friday night.
Following an early four-point deficit, WNMU (1-12, 1-8 RMAC) would come back with a pair of layups from Castrillo to tie the game at five just over three minutes in. That would turn out to be the only tie in the game as ASU (7-4, 4-4 RMAC) tallied the next basket on their way to a 9-0 run to hold the lead the remainder of the way.
Tyler Shea (Rancho Cucamunga, CA/Alta Loma) and Castrillo helped break the run with a pair of baskets to make it a five-point game, but it was too much Grizzlies. ASU went on another quick run, a 7-0 variety and would take a 45-23 lead into halftime.
The Mustangs posted the first four points of the second half with Castrillo and
Terrez Scott (Santa Clarita, CA/Valencia) tallying layups. WNMU would end up scoring 41 points in the second stanza.
ASU would outscore WNMU by 10 over the next few minutes to put the game out of reach.
WNMU made 25-of-62 (40.3) from the field and went 12-of-19 (63.2) from the foul line. Castrillo's 25 was a game-high, as he went 11-of-18 from the field. Scott added 11 points.
Five Grizzlies reached double-digits in scoring led by 16 from Shakir Smith. ASU made 44.3 percent (31-70) from the field that included 10 three-pointers. They also went 27-of-33 from the charity stripe. Points off turnovers (19-8), second-chance (26-8) and bench points (60-12) all favored the Grizzlies.
WNMU will play at Fort Lewis Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. FLC held on to edge New Mexico Highlands, 83-76, earlier tonight.
