COLORADO SPRINGS/PUEBLO, Colo. – The Western New Mexico University men's basketball team will remain on the road this week playing against UC-Colorado Springs and Colorado State University-Pueblo.
First on Friday night will be a meeting with the Mountain Lions at 7:30 p.m. UCCS is 17-2 overall and 11-2 in the RMAC and have won three straight against Colorado Christian, Black Hills State and Chadron State. Prior to those three wins they dropped their first two games of the season against Colorado Mesa and Colorado Mines. UCCS enters this weekend ranked ninth in the NABC Poll and 12
th in the Media Poll.
Derrick White leads the Mountain Lions with 25.6 points per game. He also leads the team in steals (41), blocks (37), assists (91) and rebounds (7.5). He leads the RMAC in points per game. Alex Welsh tallies 16.7 points and 7.3 rebounds, while Tim Billingsley chips in 10.1 per contest. They average 88.9 points per game and allow 71.9. They connect on 51 percent from the floor, while holding opponents to a 43.1 percentage.
In the first meeting in Silver City UCCS broke open a close game to take the 93-73 victory.
The next night, also at 7:30 p.m., WNMU will face CSU-Pueblo. The ThunderWolves are 12-7 overall and 8-5 in the RMAC after splitting their last two games with a win at Black Hills State (67-66) before falling against Chadron State (77-61). They average 80.5 points per game and allow 73.8. They make 44.2 percent from the field, while opponents are hitting at 45.6 percent.
Tyrone Marshall leads the team in points per game (13.2) as four ThunderWolves average in double-figures including Bronson Moton (12.9), Rico Spikes (10.7) and Jed Knafelc (10.6). Moton pulls down a team-high 7.2 rebounds.
In the earlier meeting in Silver City, WNMU nearly erased a double-digit deficit getting back to within two early in the second half before CSU-Pueblo pulled away for the 88-69 victory.
WNMU is 2-15 overall and 2-11 in the RMAC having split their last two games defeating Chadron State (78-76), before falling this past Saturday at New Mexico Highlands (92-69). The Mustangs average 62.1 points per game and allow 80.9 per contest. They make 37.7 percent from the field, while teams make 48.1 percent.
Marcos Castrillo (San Francisco, CA/Pinole Valley) and
Terrez Scott (Santa Clarita, CA/Valencia) both average in double-digits with Castrillo tallying 12.6 and Scott with 11.8.
Gavin Wood (Florence, AZ/Florence ) and
Steven Loucks (Yuma, AZ/Cibola) add 7.8 per game, while
Brandon Tanter (Long Beach, CA/Los Angeles Prep) chips in 7.5 per game. Castrillo also leads the team in rebounds (5.9) and blocks (9), while Scott leads in assists (71) and steals (27).
Scott is third in the RMAC in assists per game, second in steals per game and seventh in minutes per game (33.1).
