LAS VEGAS, N.M. – With one game on the schedule this week, the Western New Mexico University men's basketball team prepares to face in-state rival New Mexico Highlands University this Saturday at 4 p.m.
NMHU (3-13, 3-9 RMAC) collected their first two home wins this past weekend against Chadron State and Black Hills State. They won those two games by a combined four points. The Cowboys average 68.9 per game and allow 83.4. Three players average in double-figures in terms of scoring led by Kendrick Nichols' 17.9, followed by 15.3 from Jonathon Mines and 11.8 from Ricky Norris. Kaylen Shane leads the team in rebounding at 6.7 and also tallies 7.1 points.
WNMU (2-14, 2-10 RMAC) is coming off of a thrilling 78-76 home win against Chadron State this past Saturday. Four players scored in double-figures to power the Mustangs including
Marcos Castrillo (San Francisco, CA/Pinole Valley) (17),
Steven Loucks (Yuma, AZ/Cibola) (16),
Terrez Scott (Santa Clarita, CA/Valencia) (15) and
Adam Kesler (Silver City, NM/Silver) (10). WNMU averages 61.7 points per game and allows 80.2.
Castrillo leads the team in points (12.4), rebounds (6.1) blocks (8) and also adds nine steals. Scott posts 11.8points per game and leads the team in assists (66) and steals (26).
Brandon Tanter (Long Beach, CA/Los Angeles Prep) (7.9),
Gavin Wood (Florence, AZ/Florence ) (7.7) and
Steven Loucks (Yuma, AZ/Cibola) (7.0) all score at least seven per contest.
WNMU ranks fourth in the RMAC in fewest turnovers (208) and Scott ranks third in the conference in assists per game (4.7) and second in steals per game (1.86). Castrillo is eighth in the RMAC in defensive rebounds per game (4.9). Scott is seventh (32.8) and Tanter is ninth (31.5) in minutes played per game.
Last year, each team won on the others home floor as NMHU took the first meeting in Silver City, 81-70, while the Mustangs came back to win at the end of the season in Las Vegas as Scott hitting the winning shot, 83-82.
