DURANGO, Colo. – Following a 40 percent effort from the field and a pair of players in double-figures, the Western New Mexico University men's basketball team stayed right with Fort Lewis College before the Skyhawks held on for the 86-70 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory Saturday.
Marcos Castrillo (San Francisco, CA/Pinole Valley) (17) and
Brandon Tanter (Long Beach, CA/Los Angeles Prep) (13) led the way on offense reaching double-digits, while WNMU (1-13, 1-9 RMAC) made 22-of-55 from the field.
Castrillo opened the scoring 33 seconds in with a jumper off an assist by
Terrez Scott (Santa Clarita, CA/Valencia). FLC (12-3, 7-2 RMAC) went on a 6-0 run and held the advantage until
Steven Loucks (Yuma, AZ/Cibola) hit a three-pointer at the 13:21 mark to push WNMU back in front, 11-10.
A 14-0 run by the Skyhawks followed and they would lead the rest of the way.
The Mustangs would fight back toward the end of the half with
Tyler Shea (Rancho Cucamunga, CA/Alta Loma) hitting a jumper and Tanter a triple to pull to within six. The Skyhawks would hit a three at the buzzer to take a 39-30 lead into halftime.
After trailing by as many as 20 in the second half, WNMU would come back to within 12 off a layup by Adam Seanz. But, with just over two minutes to play, FLC would hold on for the victory.
Tanter added a team-high six rebounds, while Scott led in assists with four and steals with three.
Alex Herrera led FLC and all-scorers with 28 points, as the Skyhawks shot 48.2 percent (27-56). WNMU kept it close on points in the paint despite playing against one of the top big men in the nation as FLC held a slim 28-26 advantage. The Skyhawks held a 20-10 edge in second-chance points and a plus-nine rebounding advantage.
WNMU will return home to host Black Hills State Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
