Tennis Dominates Colorado Christian on Senior Day

SILVER CITY, N.M. – With it being senior day, the Western New Mexico University seniors went out on top in their final home games as the men came away with a 9-0 victory, while the women claimed an 8-1 win over Colorado Christian University Saturday in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.  



On the men's side, the Mustangs (8-8, 2-0 RMAC) cruised in doubles as senior Rodrigo Almeida (Arapongas, Brazil/Nene Lourenco High School)/freshman Jean-Laurent Pageault (Perrigny, France/Academi des Hauts de Nimes) took an 8-3 win at the top flight. Senior Francisco Damasio (Jundiai, Brazil/Centro Educational Sigma )/junior Alvaro Nunez (Madrid, Spain/) followed suit with an 8-1 win at No. 2, while junior Omar Lopez (Naucalpan, Mexico/)/freshman Sascha Brechtel (Neustadt an der Weinstraße, Germany/Kurpfalz Gymnasium Mannheim ) dominated at No. 3, 8-0.

In singles, No. 44 Almeida pulled out a tough win at the top flight, as he won in an opening set tiebreaker, 7-6, before winning in straight sets, 6-4. Pageault won at No. 2 (6-0, 6-1), and Brechtel at No. 3 (6-1, 6-0) dropping just one game each. WNMU would clean up over the final three spots all by scores of 6-0, 6-0 with Nunez at No. 4, Damasio at No. 5 and Lopez at No. 6.

On the women's side, The Lady Mustangs (1-18, 1-1 RMAC) swept through doubles as junior Ganna Tiurina (Kiev, Ukraine/M.M. Gromov #227)/senior Marie Monier (Saint Etienne, France/St Paul Forez Montbrison) rolled to an 8-1 win at No. 1. Senior Dena Irvin (Farmington, NM/Farmington High School)/sophomore Diamond Morrill (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) fought off a tough test before claiming an 8-4 win and then sophomore Claudia Osuna (Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico/Tec Milenio )/freshman Marissa Aguirre (Douglas, AZ/Douglas) wrapped up the doubles sweep with a 8-1 win at No. 3.

In singles, Tiurina opened things with a 6-1, 6-3 win at the top flight. Monier won a close opening set, 6-4, before winning in straight sets, 6-2. Osuna had to work three sets before coming away with the win, as she won the first set, 6-3, and after a 5-7 second set setback, she won in a super tiebreaking third, 10-5. Morrill continued the momentum as she pulled away at No. 4 with a 7-5 first set win and then a dominating 6-1 second set win. Irvin rolled at No. 5 coming away with a 6-0, 6-1 win. Aguirre at No. 3 went three sets, as she answered back an opening set 4-6 loss, by winning the second in a tiebreaker, 7-6, before a 4-10 loss in the third.
It was the final home match for seniors Almeida, Damasio, Irvin and Monier.

WNMU will continue conference play next week when they travel to Denver to face Montana State-Billings and Metro State Friday, before traveling to Pueblo on Saturday to play CSU-Pueblo.
