Box Score DURANGO, Colo. – The Western New Mexico University men's basketball team had worked their way back into the game, trailing by just four early in the second half. Fort Lewis College then went on a lengthy scoring run on their way to the 90-60 victory over the Mustangs Friday night in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
FLC (13-6, 10-5 RMAC) raced out to a 10-0 lead over the first two minutes. WNMU (1-18, 1-15 RMAC) slowly chipped away getting back to within six at 21-15 on a three by freshman forward
Steven Loucks (Yuma, AZ/Cibola). Although the Skyhawks would stretch the lead back to double-digits, the Mustangs were ready as senior center
Brelan Berry (Chandler, AZ/Basha High School) posted a dunk and after junior forward
Marcos Castrillo (San Francisco, CA/Pinole Valley) hit two from the line the lead was just four for FLC, 27-23, with six minutes to play before halftime.
The Skyhawks would again go back in front by as many as 10, but freshman point guard
Joshua Velasquez (El Paso, TX/Hanks) hit a three with 39 seconds to go leaving WNMU down by just six when Nick Tomsick closed the scoring with a late three as FLC held the 43-34 lead at the break.
Senior guard
Edward Estavillo (Wilcox, AZ/Wilcox) opened the second half strong draining a three and after an FLC basket, junior point guard
Terrez Scott (Santa Clarita, CA/Valencia) hit a jumper and Estavillo made a pair from the charity stripe cutting the deficit to four, 45-41, two minutes into the second stanza.
That would end up being as close as the Mustangs would get as FLC went on a 30-5 run over the next 11-plus minutes to open a 75-46 lead they wouldn't relinquish.
Scott led WNMU in scoring with 13 points, while also adding three assists. Estavillo, Velasquez and Berry added eight points apiece. Tomsick paced FLC and all-scorers going for 14 points.
FLC made over 53 percent from the field (31-58), while WNMU made 16-of-47 (34). FLC held a 7-5 edge in three-pointers, while WNMU had the advantage at the charity stripe (23-21).
WNMU will remain on the road Saturday night when they will play at Adams State University with game time set for 7 p.m. Adams State defeated New Mexico Highlands, 99-84, earlier tonight.
