DURANGO/ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Western New Mexico University men's basketball team travels this weekend to face Fort Lewis College and Adams State University.
FLC and ASU are just a game apart in the conference standings with FLC coming in at 12-6 overall and 9-5 in the RMAC, whereas ASU is 12-6 overall and 8-6 in the RMAC.
First on Friday night WNMU (1-17, 1-14 RMAC) will face Fort Lewis at 7:30 p.m. The Skyhawks are coming off of a pair of losses to Colorado Mines (88-70) and Adams State in overtime (97-95). Their last win came at Colorado Christian, 87-82, back on Jan. 24.
Nick Tomsick and Alex Herrera continue to power the offense with the two combing for nearly 40 points a night with Tomsick going for 20.4 and Herrera at 19.1. Herrera also leads the team in rebounds (9.3) and blocks (69).
The Skyhawks came away with an 88-64 win at WNMU back on Jan. 11.
The next night at 7 p.m., WNMU will play at Adams State. The Grizzlies are coming on as of late having won five straight that started with a win over Regis (91-59). They have also rolled up wins over Colorado Mines (89-75), Colorado Christian (103-91), Northern New Mexico (79-76) and Fort Lewis (97-95).
Five players average in double-figures for the Grizzlies including Bruno Machado (12), Juwan Buchanan (11.2), Jaree Crawford (10.9), Julian Scott (10.7) and Mikey Hope (10.6). Mike Hemsley leads in rebounds at 6.6 per game.
ASU defeated WNMU, 100-73, back on Jan. 10 in Silver City.
Junior forward
Marcos Castrillo (San Francisco, CA/Pinole Valley) leads the team at 12.8 per night, he also leads the team in rebounding (6.6) and field goals (84). Senior center
Brelan Berry (Chandler, AZ/Basha High School) pours in 12.1 per night, along with 4.5 rebounds and is second in field goals (78). Junior point guard
Terrez Scott (Santa Clarita, CA/Valencia) scores the third-most points (11.3), while leading the team in assists (118), steals (28) and minutes per game (32.8).
WNMU as a team in the RMAC are sixth in assists per game (14.06) and eighth in steals (6.06). Individually, Castrillo is seventh in rebounding (6.6), sixth in field goal percentage (49.1), Berry is tied for seventh in field goal percentage (48.8), Scott leads in assists (6.6), assist/turnover ratio (2.0), tied for sixth in steals (1.6) and seventh in minutes (32.8).
