Men's Basketball to Host Cougars, Orediggers This Weekend

SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Western New Mexico University men's basketball team returns home for the final time this season when they host Colorado Christian University and No. 11 Colorado School of Mines this weekend.


First up on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. will be a matchup with CCU. The Cougars are 13-10 overall and 11-8 in the RMAC. They have won three straight over Regis (84-77), Chadron State (94-74) and Black Hills State (93-80). Kyle Weaver leads the team posting 19.2 points per game, followed by 18.5 from Avery Redmond and 15.1 from Michael Brown. In the earlier matchup back on Dec. 7 in Lakewood the Cougars pulled away in the second half for a 93-68 victory.


The next night on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. No. 11 Colorado Mines will be in town. The Orediggers have also won three straight over Regis (83-58), Black Hills State (73-52) and Chadron State (104-72). Four players average double-figures in scoring led by Brian Muller's 13.7, Brett Green and Trevor Wages average 13.5, while Luke Meisch pours in 13.4. CSM won the earlier matchup back on Dec. 6 in Golden, 108-69. It will also be senior night for Edward Estavillo (Wilcox, AZ/Wilcox), Berry, Chad Arechiga (Tucson, AZ/Ironwood Ridge), Ryan Crane (Anthem, AZ/Boulder Creek High School) and Nate Murdock (Phoenix, AZ/Pinnacle High School).


WNMU (1-21, 1-18 RMAC) is coming off a pair of tough road games as the Mustangs came close at Gunnison, falling late to Western State (80-71) and then fell the next night at Colorado Mesa (72-45). Junior forward Marcos Castrillo (San Francisco, CA/Pinole Valley) leads the team in scoring at 12.3 per game, while also leading the team in rebounds (6.5), blocks (16) and field goals (99). Senior center Brelan Berry (Chandler, AZ/Basha High School) adds 11.5 per game, along with 3.9 rebounds, 11 assists, 14 blocks, seven steals and 93 field goals. Junior point guard Terrez Scott (Santa Clarita, CA/Valencia) also chips in 11.5 points per game, along with leading the team in assists (139), steals (32) and free throws (78).


In terms of rankings in the RMAC individually, Castrillo is tied for ninth in rebounds per game (6.5), Scott is second in assists per game (6.3), second in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.0), and ninth in minutes played (32.6).


As a team in the RMAC rankings, WNMU is ninth in turnover margin (-0.73), 10th in assist-to-turnover ratio (0.94), ninth in blocked shots (2.36), sixth in assists (13.23), and ninth in steals (5.86).
