Mavericks Start Early in Victory Over Men's Basketball

Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa University jumped out scoring the first 13 points of the game Saturday on their way to defeating the Western New Mexico University men's basketball team, 72-45, in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.

"We came out very flat! Offensively, defensively and all phases," first-year head coach Jeff Law said. "We dug a huge hole for ourselves. Better effort in second half, but damage was already done."

CMU (12-11, 10-9 RMAC) moved out to a 13-0 lead over the first seven-plus minutes of the opening half. Senior center Brelan Berry (Chandler, AZ/Basha High School) got WNMU (1-21, 1-18 RMAC) on the board with a layup at the 12:14 mark. Freshman Enrique Borroel (El Paso, TX/Riverside) made it a 4-0 run with his own layup at the 10:39 mark leaving the Mavs ahead, 13-4.

The offense kept coming for CMU going on a 9-0 run to jump their lead to 18, 22-4, with 8:33 to play before halftime. The Mavericks would end up taking a 39-12 lead into the locker room.

Junior point guard Terrez Scott (Santa Clarita, CA/Valencia) helped pull WNMU to within 24 near the midway point of the second half with a three-point-play, but that would be as close as the Mustangs would get the rest of the game. WNMU ended up playing even with CMU in the second half as both teams scored 33 points.

Scott led the way for WNMU with nine points, followed by eight from Berry and seven from junior forward Marcos Castrillo (San Francisco, CA/Pinole Valley). Ryan Stephan led CMU and all-scorers going for 23 points. The Mavs shot 57.1 percent (28-49) from the field, while WNMU made 18-of-48 (37.5). CMU also held the edge in three-pointers (8-4) and at the foul line (8-5).

WNMU will return home for the final pair of home games this season when they host Colorado Christian Friday night at 7:30 p.m. and nationally-ranked Colorado Mines on Saturday night that will also be senior night.
