Men's Basketball Travels to Face Mountaineers, Mavericks

GUNNISON/GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Western New Mexico University men's basketball team travels this week to face Western State Colorado University and Colorado Mesa University.


First up will be a meeting with WSCU (2-19, 2-15 RMAC) on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. WNMU (1-19, 1-16 RMAC) defeated the Mountaineers, 81-52, back on Dec 14 in Silver City. Senior center Brelan Berry (Chandler, AZ/Basha High School) led the way pouring in 22 points. WSCU has lost three straight since a 76-71 home win over Colorado Christian on Jan. 31. Jordan Adams averages 17.1 points per game to lead the Mountaineer offense.


The next night on Saturday the Mustangs will face CMU at 7:30 p.m. The Mavericks (10-11, 8-9 RMAC) split their last road trip defeating Black Hills State (71-64), but fell to Chadron State (94-82). WNMU and CMU went back-and-forth on Dec. 13 in Silver City before the Mavericks pulled away for the 58-53 victory. Ryan Stephan leads the team in both scoring per game (18.5) and rebounding (6.1).


The Mustangs are led by a trio of players averaging double-figures including junior forward Marcos Castrillo (San Francisco, CA/Pinole Valley) (12.2), Berry (11.8) and junior point guard Terrez Scott (Santa Clarita, CA/Valencia) (11.8). Castrillo also leads the team in rebounds per game (6.6), field goals (89), and blocks (14). Scott leads the way in assists (126), steals (29), free throws (74) and minutes per game (32.5).


As far as individual rankings in the RMAC, Castrillo is ninth in rebounding per game (6.6). Berry is seventh in field goal percentage (48.9). Scott leads the conference in assist per game (6.3), assist to turnover ratio (1.9), and eighth in minutes per game (32.5).


As a team in terms of RMAC rankings, WNMU is sixth in assists per game (13.45), ninth in steals per game (6.05), and ninth in turnover margin (-.80).
