Mustangs Head to Denver to Face Rangers, Roadrunners

DENVER, Colo. – A road trip awaits the Western New Mexico University men's basketball team out of the holiday break as they will travel to face Regis and Metro State.

Regis (3-6, 1-4 RMAC) split their last two games defeating Chadron State (63-58) before falling in double-overtime to Black Hills State (80-78). Brett Hartshorne (12.8) and Dexter Sienko (10.9) lead the way in scoring. Sienko leads the team in rebounds with 7.9 per contest.

Last year Regis pulled away for the 74-67 win in Silver City. Regis has won the last two in the series with WNMU claiming a pair of wins during the 2011-12 season.

WNMU and Regis will face each other at 7 p.m. on Friday.

The next night on Saturday the Mustangs will play at Metro State also at 7 p.m. The Roadrunners were ranked 14th in the latest NABC Poll that came out Dec. 16. MSU Denver is 9-2 on the season and 4-1 in the RMAC with their lone conference loss coming against UCCS. They cruised to a pair of wins last time out against Black Hills State (77-45) and Chadron State (72-51).

Mitch McCarron and Nicholas Kay power an offense that averages over 75 points per game. McCarron and Kay each average 20.5 per contest. The duo also leads the team in rebounds each with six a night.

The Roadrunners took a 93-54 win in Silver City last year.

The Mustangs (0-10, 0-6 RMAC) dropped their last two games against CSU-Pueblo (88-69) and UCCS (93-73). Terrez Scott (Santa Clarita, CA/Valencia) led the team in scoring both nights and leads the squad averaging 12.1 points per game. He also leads the way in steals (18), assists (37) and pulls down 5.0 rebounds a game. Marcos Castrillo (San Francisco, CA/Pinole Valley) chips in 10 per night and leads the team in both rebounds (5.7) and blocks (6).

In terms of RMAC rankings, Scott is fourth in assists per game, first in steals and Castrillo is seventh in defensive rebounds per game (5.0). In NCAA national rankings Scott is tied for 50th in steals per game and 68th in assists.
