Men's Basketball Preps for Mountain Lions, ThunderWolves This Weekend

SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Western New Mexico University men's basketball team will remain home this weekend when they will face UC-Colorado Springs and Colorado State University-Pueblo.


WNMU has come close in their past few games, as they fell late at Chadron State (88-82) and then this past weekend at home against New Mexico Highlands (81-70), as the game was tied at halftime.


First on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. will be a meeting with UC-Colorado Springs. UCCS is 11-6 overall and 8-5 in the RMAC and are coming off of wins over Black Hills State (81-52) and Chadron State (92-82). The Mountain Lions defeated the Mustangs, 82-66, back on Dec. 21 in Colorado Springs.


Derrick White has been one of the top performers in the conference as the 6-foot-5 sophomore guard from Parker, Colo., averages 19.8 points per game and also pulls down 5.9 rebounds. Alex Welsh is second on the team at 13 per game and Dalton Patten chips in another 11.1 per night.


The next night WNMU will face CSU-Pueblo also at 7:30 p.m. The ThunderWolves are 9-8 overall and 7-6 in the RMAC and split their last two games defeating Chadron State (94-88), but lost to Black Hills State (84-76). CSU-Pueblo took the earlier matchup back on Dec. 20, 91-61, in Pueblo.


Six players average over double-figures for CSU-Pueblo led by 15.1 per night by 5-foot-10 senior point guard Nate Tigner from Fort Worth, Tex. Julian Caldwell adds 12.6, Matt Rosenbaum with 11.2, Jed Knafelc with 11, Wendell Lee with 10.8 and Devonte Malcolm with 10.7. Two other players average over eight a night.


WNMU (1-15, 1-12 RMAC) is led by 13 points per night from junior forward Marcos Castrillo (San Francisco, CA/Pinole Valley). Senior center Brelan Berry (Chandler, AZ/Basha High School) adds 12.1 per game and junior point guard Terrez Scott (Santa Clarita, CA/Valencia) is in double-figures at 10.6 per game. Castrillo also leads the team in rebounds (6.4), and tied with Berry for the team lead in blocks (12). Scott leads the team in assists (108), steals (24) and minutes per game (32.4).


Castrillo ranks ninth in the RMAC in rebounds per game, Berry is ninth in field goal percentage (48.8), Scott is first in assists per game (6.8), first in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.0) and seventh in minutes per game (32.4).


The Mustangs will also be wearing pink "Hoops For A Cure" shirts during both games in support of Play 4 Kay and cancer awareness. Fans will have the opportunity to purchase shirts for $10 with all proceeds benefiting the Play 4 Kay Foundation.
