SPEARFISH, S.D./CHADRON, Neb. – The Western New Mexico University men's basketball team hits the road for their longest trip of the season when they will face Black Hills State University and Chadron State College.
First up will be a matchup with Black Hills State University on Friday night. The Yellow Jackets have lost four straight, with their last game coming on Jan. 11 at South Dakota Mines (61-49). Their last win came at home over Regis, 88-82, back on Dec. 21. BHSU is 5-8 overall and 3-6 in the RMAC. Tommy Earl leads the offense posting 17.2 points per game followed by 12.5 from Myles Henry and 11.5 from Yoshio Allen. Cameron Anderson leads the team in rebounds at 6.3 per game.
WNMU defeated BHSU last year in Silver City, 74-69.
Lucio Luttrell (Las Cruces, NM/Las Cruces High School) led the Mustangs with 20 points. Tanner Adler led the Yellow Jackets also going for 20 points.
The next night on Saturday WNMU will play at Chadron State College. The Eagles won their last game on Jan. 9 against Black Hills State, 82-81 and are now 6-7 overall and 3-6 in the RMAC. Zac Bargen leads the team in scoring at 12.4 per game, followed by 10.2 per game from Evan Brooks. Bargen also leads the team in rebounding at 5.1.
WNMU bested CSC last year in Silver City, 75-65, with
Chad Carter (Tucson, AZ/Ironwood Ridge High School) going for 24 points. Bargen led the Eagles with 20 points. CSC won the last matchup in Chadron, 91-85, back on Jan. 14, 2012.
WNMU, 1-12 overall and 1-9 in the RMAC, will look to snap a six-game slide. Senior center
Brelan Berry (Chandler, AZ/Basha High School) leads three Mustangs in double-figures at 12.4 per game. He is sixth in field goal percentage in the RMAC (49.3). Junior forward
Marcos Castrillo (San Francisco, CA/Pinole Valley) adds another 12 and junior point guard
Terrez Scott (Santa Clarita, CA/Valencia) with 10.1. Scott leads the team in assists (89), which ranks first in the RMAC in assists per game (6.8), first in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.2) and steals (20), while Berry leads in blocks (9) and Castrillo in rebounds at 6.3 and ranks tenth in the RMAC.
WNMU ranks eighth in the RMAC in assist-to-turnover ratio (0.96), sixth in assists (14.38), and ninth in blocked shots (2.38).
The Mustangs will face both teams at 7:30 p.m. first against Black Hills State on Friday and then Chadron State on Saturday.
