Adams State Uses Fastbreak and Points in Paint to Power Past Men's Basketball

Adam Kesler scored a career-high 18 points Friday against Adams State.
Box Score SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Adams State University Grizzlies used 40 fastbreak points and 58 points in the paint to defeat the Western New Mexico University men's basketball team, 100-73, Saturday night in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.


WNMU (1-11, 1-8 RMAC) scored the first basket over a minute in on a layup by senior center Brelan Berry (Chandler, AZ/Basha High School). After a jumper by freshman forward Steven Loucks (Yuma, AZ/Cibola) kept the Mustangs in front by two (4-2), ASU (7-7, 4-4 RMAC) would go on a 18-6 run to take a 10-point lead at 20-10 near the midway point of the half.


Junior forward Marcos Castrillo (San Francisco, CA/Pinole Valley), who tied for the team high in points with 18 along with sophomore guard Adam Kesler (Silver City, NM/Silver), which was a career-high, stopped the run with a jumper and then Kesler had a quick layup in transition to bring WNMU to within six.


Following another fast break spurt by the Grizzlies, a Berry tip-in pulled WNMU back to within six with 6:50 to go before halftime when ASU closed the half on a 30-18 run to take a 55-37 lead into the locker rooms.


ASU continued with the quick offense to start the second half, as after a Castrillo jumper opened the scoring 15 seconds in, the Grizzlies countered with 10-0 run over the next three minutes and never looked back.


Castrillo and Kesler tied for the game-high in points with 18 apiece. Castrillo went 7-for-12 from the field, while Kesler went 6-of-12. Castrillo led the team in rebounds with six. Berry also reached double-digits going for 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting.


The Grizzlies had five players in double-figures led by 14 apiece from Juwann Buchanan and Chuck Cole.


Each team shot nearly 50 percent with ASU connecting on 38-of-65 (58.5) to 27-of-55 (49.1) for WNMU. ASU held an 8-4 edge in three-pointers made and a 16-15 advantage at the foul line.


WNMU will return to action Saturday night when they will host Fort Lewis beginning at 7:30 p.m. Fort Lewis defeated New Mexico Highlands, 82-69, earlier tonight.
