ABILENE, Tex. – The Western New Mexico University tennis teams downed McMurry University in a pair of neutral site contests Friday afternoon. Both teams came away with 7-2 victories.
On the women's side, Western New Mexico University (WNMU) won five of the six singles contests. At the top flight,
Ganna Tiurina (Kiev, Ukraine/M.M. Gromov #227) cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory.
Ashley Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado) dropped just three games in her 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 2.
Claudia Osuna (Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico/Tec Milenio ) made it three straight with her 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3. David Aragon had a tough first set at No. 5, pulling out a tight 6-4 victory and then she went on for the straight set win with a 6-1 second set triumph.
Dena Irvin (Farmington, NM/Farmington High School) won her match at No. 6 with a 6-2, 6-0 victory.
Doris Berberic (Lower Hutt, New Zealand/Hutt Valley High School) fell at No. 4, 6-4, 6-0. In doubles, Tiurina and Newell pulled out the 8-4 win at the top flight. Berberic and
Diamond Morrill (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) had no problems at No. 2 with an 8-2 win. Osuna and Irvin dropped their match at No. 3, 8-6.
The No. 30 ranked men's team had the same story, with WNMU taking five of the singles contests. At the top flight,
Rodrigo Almeida (Arapongas, Brazil/Nene Lourenco High School) got through a close first set, taking it 6-4 and then won in straight sets with a 6-2 second set.
Juan Pablo Fuentes (Guadalajara, Mexico/) went into a tiebreaker in his first set at No. 2, but came away with the 7-6 (4) win. He continued the momentum with a 6-4 win in the second set.
Matthieu Covizzi (Noailly, France/) muscled through a back-and-forth match at No. 3, as he took the first set 6-3 and after dropping the second set, 6-3, he came back with a tiebreaking win in the third set, 7-6.
Alvaro Nunez (Madrid, Spain/) cruised at No. 4 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
Roy Ulibarri (Dexter, NM/Dexter High School) played well at No. 6 collecting the 6-2, 6-2 win.
Jorge Carretero (Asturias, Spain/) at No. 5 dropped a tough 7-5, 6-4 match at No. 5. In doubles, Almeida and Fuentes ran into a tough duo, falling, 8-3. Nunez and Ulibarri helped get WNMU back on the winning track with an 8-5 win at No. 2. At No. 3, Covizzi and Carretro dominated in an 8-2 win.
WNMU will face Abilene Christian tomorrow in a pair of matches to conclude the weekend.
