Box Score SILVER CITY, N.M. – The first half was close throughout after the Western New Mexico University football team scored first and trailed by just six at the break when Chadron State College exploded for 43 points in the second half on their way to a 59-17 win over the Mustangs Saturday afternoon at Altamirano Field in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.
WNMU (2-6, 2-5 RMAC) forced a three-and-out to start the game and then the offense went to work at the WNMU 23.
Donald Byrd (Long Beach, CA/Long Beach Poly) would come through with catches of eight, 13 and again for eight to move the ball to the 41 of CSC (7-2, 6-1 RMAC). Abe Macias and
Michael Ball (West Covina, CA/Rowland) would each tally runs of 15 to move the ball to the 10 and
Mitch Glasmann (Temecula, CA/Chaparral) would have plenty of time to pass when he hit a wide open
Ronnell Pompey (Los Angeles, CA/Fairfax Senior HS) in the back of the end zone for the 7-0 lead nearly halfway through the first quarter.
The Eagles would respond, scoring on just three plays and covering 75 yards and after a blocked extra point WNMU was still in front, 7-6. CSC would strike again early in the second quarter taking advantage of good field position for a 13-7 lead.
The Mustangs would pick up a couple of key third downs on a drive that resulted in a 34-yard field goal from Josh McInitre. WNMU collected a third-and-10 on a pass to Larry Young for 12 yards and then later a six-yard rush from Glasmann on third-and-six again moved the chains leading the field goal for the 13-10 CSC lead with two minutes to play before halftime.
The Eagles would have one more say before the break, as Randy Wertz hit a 34-yard field goal with 18 seconds left to give CSC a 16-10 halftime lead.
CSC would take off in the second half. First, they forced a fumble at the CSC 34 and would turn that into points nine plays later on a touchdown run and later two-point conversion for a 24-10 lead with eight minutes to play in the third.
The Eagles would score once more in the third quarter and then again early in the fourth for a 38-10 lead. The stretch of 32 unanswered for CSC wrapped up with another touchdown at the 14:21 mark for a 45-10 lead.
The Mustangs would score once more on the ensuing possession with Macias capping a 75-yard drive with a three-yard run to leave CSC ahead, 45-17.
The Eagles would find the end zone two more times to post the final score of 59-17.
CSC used a dominant rushing attack, chewing up 469 yards on 51 attempts and totaled 610 yards, while WNMU had 354 yards of total offense. Running back Glen Clinton led the Eagles with 242 yards on 19 carries. Macias led the Mustang rushing attack with 136 yards on 16 carries and one score.
Glasmann completed 21-of-38 for 183 yards and a touchdown, with Byrd pulling down nine passes for 80 yards and Pompey had five for 67 and a touchdown.
Jerrald Hines (Los Angeles, CA/) and
Blake Cuero (Houston, TX/Marshall) led the WNMU defense with nine tackles each, as Hines had three solo and one tackle for loss.
WNMU will hit the road next Saturday when they will play at Black Hills State with kickoff set for 1 p.m. in Spearfish, S.D. Black Hills State picked up their first win of the season today when they defeated New Mexico Highlands, 48-45.
