Box Score ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Western New Mexico University football team scored the first three points of the game against Adams State University before the Grizzlies scored 21 unanswered on their way to defeating the Mustangs, 41-20, Saturday afternoon in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action inside Rex Stadium.

WNMU (2-5, 2-4 RMAC) opened the game with a lengthy drive after forcing an ASU (6-2, 4-2 RMAC) three-and-out. Beginning at the 29, Mitch Glasmann (Temecula, CA/Chaparral) went to the air and found Donald Byrd (Long Beach, CA/Long Beach Poly) for 22 yards to the ASU 49. Later, on third-and-21, Glasmann again hooked up with Byrd for a 28-yard strike to the 32. After a pass interference penalty and then three downs with no gain, Josh McIntire (El Cajon, CA/West Hills) hit a 27-yard field goal for the 3-0 WNMU lead at the 10:57 mark.

The teams traded possessions for the rest of the first quarter and then the Grizzlies went to work on offense in the second quarter. They would move the ball 83 yards on nine plays to score a 16-yard rushing touchdown and take a 7-3 lead two minutes into the second quarter.

A big play helped boost ASU's lead to 14-3 on a 95-yard run on third-and-six. Another quick strike resulted in an ASU touchdown as a 60-yard pass made it 21-3 with six minutes to go before halftime.

WNMU would come back to break the 21-0 run with a field goal with 3:24 left in the second quarter with McIntire connecting on a 38-yarder leaving the Grizzlies ahead 21-6 and that would be the score at the break.

An interception return opened the scoring in the second half when ASU picked off Glasmann and returned it 12 yards for a 28-6 lead, as that interception was the lone turnover in the game by either team.

Following two more touchdowns to move ahead 41-6, WNMU would answer back with a pair of scores. With the ball in ASU territory at the 43, passes from Glasmann to Ronnell Pompey (Los Angeles, CA/Fairfax Senior HS), Byrd, Brent Courtney (Oceanside CA/Carlsbad HS) netted gains of nine, 12 and 16 before a strike to Larry Young went for a six-yard touchdown to leave the Grizzlies in front, 41-13, with just under six minutes to play.
Michael Ball (West Covina, CA/Rowland) setup the offense deep in ASU territory late in the quarter as he returned a 44-yard punt 70 yards to the Grizzly 14. A few plays later, Glasmann hit Pompey for the two-yard touchdown to provide the final margin of 41-20.

ASU outgained WNMU, 486 to 300. WNMU, passing against one of the top passing defenses around gained 254 yards through the air, while ASU held the edge on the ground rushing for 292 yards. Abe Macias rushed for 62 yards on 19 carries, while Glasmann completed 19-of-49 for 254 yards and two scores. Pompey tallied eight catches for 70 yards, while Byrd had five receptions for 100 yards. On defense, Zachary Dembrowski (Lake Elsinore/Elsinore HS) led the way with 10 tackles, eight solo.

WNMU will return home to face Chadron State this coming Saturday at Altamirano Field with kickoff set for 12 p.m. The Eagles edged New Mexico Highlands, 31-24, earlier on Saturday and remain in second in the RMAC with a 5-1 conference mark.
