PUEBLO, Colo. – Regular season Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Champions. That's exactly what the Western New Mexico University men's tennis team is following two more wins Saturday to go undefeated in conference and collect the regular season crown.
WNMU (12-8, 6-0 RMAC) opened the day defeating Colorado Mesa, 8-1. The Mustangs dropped just one match in doubles, with the Mavericks winning the No. 1 over
Johan Weich (Landskrona, Sweden/Filbornaskolan High School)/
Juan Pablo Fuentes (Guadalajara, Mexico/), 8-6. WNMU cruised to take the other two, with
Rodrigo Almeida (Arapongas, Brazil/Nene Lourenco High School)/Juan Benoit Belin winning at No. 2, 8-2 and
Omar Lopez (Naucalpan, Mexico/)/
Roy Ulibarri (Dexter, NM/Dexter High School) taking No. 3, 8-5. In singles, Almeida continued his dominance at No. 1 with a 7-5, 6-0 victory. Weich followed that with a tough three-set win, dropping the first set, 5-7, but then pulled out 6-4, 6-3 wins.
Matthieu Covizzi (Noailly, France/) at No. 3 won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2. Belin controlled his match at No. 4, 6-4, 6-2.
Alvaro Nunez (Madrid, Spain/) and Ulibarri won in straight sets in the final two, with Nunez pulling out 6-4, 6-2 win and Lopez a 6-0, 6-1 victory.
In the later match of the day, WNMU defeated rival Nebraska-Kearney, 6-3, with both teams entering with undefeated records in the conference. WNMU cleaned house in doubles, with Weich/Fuentes winning 8-5 at 1, Almeida/Belin winning 8-5 at 2 and Lopez/Ulibarri winning 9-7 at 3. In singles, WNMU won at No. 1, 3 and 5. Almeida won in straight sets again at the top flight, 6-3, 6-1. Weich won at No. 3, 6-3, 6-3 and Belin at No. 5, 7-5, 7-5. UNK pulled out wins at No. 2 defeating Fuentes, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Covizzi at No. 4, 4-6, 6-4, 11-9 and Ulibarri at No. 6 6-3, 0-6, 10-3.
WNMU will conclude the regular season on Wednesday at New Mexico State before opening the RMAC Tournament back in Denver beginning on Friday.
