ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Western New Mexico university men's tennis team made quick work of RMAC foe CSU-Pueblo, 8-1, Sunday morning.
The doubles competition was close, but the Mustangs came out with all three. In the top flight,
Juan Pablo Fuentes (Guadalajara, Mexico/)/
Johan Weich (Landskrona, Sweden/Filbornaskolan High School) defeated Bruno/Hurtado/Alex Lesiuk, 8-4. The No.2 doubles ended up ening the closest of the three, as
Rodrigo Almeida (Arapongas, Brazil/Nene Lourenco High School)/Matthieu Cavizzi edged Tom Chavez/Saul Shrom, 8-5. In the final match, Roy Ullibarri/Jean-Benoit Belin won 8-4 over Anthony Breitenbach/A. Mancayo-Samperio.
In the singles competition, Weich was bested by Hurtado, 6-7, 1-6, at the top flight. Fuentes made quick work of Breitenbach at No. 2, 6-1, 6-1. Almeida, playing at No.3, fought tough in his opening set, besting Lesiuk, 7-6 and then rolled in the second set, 6-0. At No. 4, Belin dropped five games, but won in straight sets over Shrom, 6-3, 6-2. Same story at No. 5, with
Alvaro Nunez (Madrid, Spain/) winning 6-3, 6-2 over Mancayo-Samperio. In the final singles match, Ullibarri got through a tough 6-4 first set win over Chavez and then took the second set, 6-2, to give the Mustangs five of the six wins in the singles matches.
WNMU will head to Phoenix this Wednesday as they will compete in the Grand Canyon University Tournament that will last until Saturday.
