GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Western New Mexico University football team will make the long trip to northwestern Colorado to battle Colorado Mesa this Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Stocker Stadium.
CMU (1-3, 0-2 RMAC) has dropped two games in a row to conference opponents, falling to Nebraska-Kearney (52-10) and this past Saturday in a nail-bitter at New Mexico Highlands (41-38). The Mavs only win came on the road in the second game of the season at Dixie State (52-30).
WNMU (2-2, 1-1 RMAC) defeated then Mesa State, 20-10, a season ago in Silver City, as the Mavs jumped out to a 10-0 first quarter lead, before the Mustangs tied the game in the second half and then scored 10 more points in the fourth quarter for the victory.
CMU is powered on the ground by Jake Cimolino, who has collected 297 yards on 73 attempts and one touchdown. Passing-wise, Chris Henderson and Robert Felberg have split time at QB, with Henderson connecting on 28-of-46 passes for 407 yards and two touchdowns, while Felberg has thrown 30 passes, completing 12 for 142 yards.
On the other end of the passes, Jay Knaus has pulled in the most receptions with 17 for 172, while Tanner Whaley leads the team in receiving yards at 270.
The defense has been active, having recorded 45 tackles for loss, 10 sacks and eight interceptions.
Connor Wright leads the team in tackles (46), tackles for loss (15) and sacks (8). Trent deBraga holds the team lead in interceptions with three.
WNMU has had several rushers this season, with
Daveon Barner (Long Beach, CA/Long Beach Polytechnic) accumulating the most attempts (52) and yards (172), while finding the end zone once.
Abraham Macias (El Paso, TX/Socorro HS) has carried it 25 times for 111 yards and a team-leading two touchdowns. Quarterback
David Ingram (Irvine, CA/Woodbridge HS) has the second-most attempts (42), for 21 yards and one touchdown.
Ingram has thrown all but one pass this year, connecting on 83-of-146 for eight touchdowns and five interceptions and 1,026 yards.
Kameron Drawhorn (San Diego, CA/Fallbrook HS) has the only other pass, which was complete for eight yards.
Receiving-wise,
Markis Sumpter (Oceanside, CA/Fallbrook High School) has 26 grabs for 363 yards and four touchdowns, while
Ronnell Pompey (Los Angeles, CA/Fairfax Senior HS) has brought in 18 passes for 225 yards and one score.
The Mustangs defense is led by
Justin Hunt (/), who has 28 tackles, three-and-a-half for loss and two-and-a-half sacks.
Dashaun Briggs (AZ/) has six tackles for loss and two-and-a-half sacks, while Bernard Williams leads the team in interceptions with two.
