SILVER CITY, N.M. – David Ingram (Irvine, CA/Woodbridge HS) hit
Markis Sumpter (Oceanside, CA/Fallbrook High School) on a 17-yard touchdown pass and after
Kameron Drawhorn (San Diego, CA/Fallbrook HS) added the extra point, the Western New Mexico football team had come back to tie the game at 21 with five seconds to play. Colorado School of Mines, though, recovered in overtime, as after they forced the Mustangs to turn the ball over on downs, they would score a one-yard touchdown on a sneak by quarterback Clay Garcia to lift the Orediggers to a 27-21 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) victory Saturday afternoon at Ben Altamirano Field.
With Colorado School of Mines (CSM) ahead, 21-14, Western New Mexico (WNMU) took over at their 12-yard line with only 2:17 left to play in the game.
With two timeouts remaining, the Mustangs (2-2, 1-1 RMAC) began to move down the field.
Ingram started the drive with a five-yard strike to Ronnell Pompay. After an incomplete pass, an early third-and-five arose in which Ingram hit
Markis Sumpter (Oceanside, CA/Fallbrook High School) for seven yards and a big first down.
Running the no-huddle offense throughout, WNMU came through with an 11-yard pass from Ingram to
Donald Byrd (Long Beach, CA/Long Beach Poly) after an incompletion to rest the ball at the WNMU 35.
The next play looked to derail a solid drive for the Mustangs, as Ingram slipped a pass out to
Abraham Macias (El Paso, TX/Socorro HS) that went for 22 yards, but holding brought the play all the way back, moving the ball ahead just one year to the 36 for a first-and-nine.
Ingram and company weren't rattled, as he went back to Macias for five yards and then a big strike to
Salvador Garcia (Anthony, TX/Anthony HS) went for 21 yards all the way down to the 38 of CSM.
Ingram found Macias again out of the backfield for nine more yards and then a quick seven yard strike to Pompay had WNMU all the way down to the CSM 22 which resulted in a first down and the Mustangs' second timeout of the second half.
Ingram found Tunstall on the next pass for 10 yards and another first down to the 12, but he couldn't get out of bounds forcing WNMU to take their final timeout.
With 10 seconds to play, a false start moved WNMU back to the 17 which set the scene for Ingram to hit Sumpter on a crossing route in the middle of the end zone for the touchdown with five seconds left.
Drawhorn completed the 12 play, 88 yard drive with an extra point to tie the game at 21.
After WNMU stopped CSM on the ensuing kickoff, WNMU would get the ball first in overtime.
An incompletion and a one-yard pass play left a third-and-nine at the CSM 24. CSM came through with a big sack for a loss of 11 on the next play, leaving the Mustangs with no choice but to go for it on fourth-and-20.
Ingram again found Sumpter, but he was only able to gain 14 yards, which turned the ball over on downs.
The Orediggers (2-2, 1-1 RMAC) wasted little time moving the ball, getting a 14-yard pass down to the 11 and another pass moved the ball to the four.
It would then take five plays, but finally on third-and-goal at the one, quarterback Garcia found the end zone to win the game for the Orediggers. WNMU had held running back Dan Palmer out of the end zone on three straight rushes, the only problem was the second run collected a first down, which would eventually come into play when it would take CSM three more rushes to find the end zone.
The game started with CSM fumbling early in their own end, but the Oredigger defense stopped the Mustangs, forcing a punt. After the teams traded possessions, Palmer rumbled 71 yards to the end zone and after the extra point, CSM held the early 7-0 lead with seven minutes to play in the first quarter.
WNMU would answer in the second quarter, as Ingram called his own number from two yards out to find the end zone to cap a five play, 39 yard drive and after Drawhorn drilled the point after, the game was tied at seven early on in the second quarter.
The teams would remain scoreless the rest of the half leaving the game tied at seven at halftime.
WNMU would get the ball first out of the locker room, but would punt after a three-and-out. CSM would follow with a three-and-out to give WNMU the ball near their 40 after Garcia returned the punt 21 yards.
Ingram would take over from there, rushing for 11 yards and after a one-yard run and a four-yard pass to Sumpter, Ingram hit Sumpter on a quick out near the sidelines and he would turn it into a big play, after breaking a couple of tackles he went all the way for a touchdown of 45 yards for the 13-7 lead. Drawhorn added the extra point to give the Mustangs a 14-7 lead with just under 12 minutes to play in the third quarter.
CSM would come back to tie the game near the end of the third quarter, as one a trick play, wide receiver Diamond Gillis threw the ball on a rope to Matt Brown who collected the ball near the WNMU 10 and would break and tackle on his way to the end zone and after the extra point, the game was tied again, this time at 14 with just under five minutes in the third.
The Orediggers would then regain the lead for the first time since 7-0, as they opened the fourth quarter with a eight play, 73 yard drive the closed with a four-yard pass from Garcia to Tevin Champagne and after the PAT, CSM held a 21-14 lead with 14:27 to play in the game.
The teams would then trade possessions throughout the rest of the fourth quarter before the WNMU defense came through with another stopped and forced a CSM punt that sailed all the way down to the Mustang 12 to set the scene for the drive to tie the game.
The teams were close on stats, with CSM running 74 plays for 304 yards, to 76 plays for 296 for WNMU.
WNMU threw the ball for almost 100 more yards than CSM (298-199), while the Orediggers held the advantage on the ground, chewing up 105 yards to minus-two for the Mustangs.
CSM held the ball for over 45 minutes (45:47), while WNMU held the ball for just over 29 minutes (29:13).
Each team turned the ball over twice, with CSM fumbling the ball away both times, while WNMU threw two interceptions.
Individually,
Tyler Jackson (San Diego, CA/Ramona HS) rushed for 13 yards on seven attempts. Through the air, Ingram completed 28-of-43 passes for 298 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, along with one rushing touchdown.
Receiving, Sumpter pulled down seven passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns, with a long of 45. Pompey, Macias and Byrd then combined for 126 yards.
Defensively,
Justin Hunt (/) came away with nine total tackles, two and a half sacks and two and a half tackles for loss. A. Williams added eight total tackles, one and a half sacks and two and a half tackles for loss.
Dashaun Briggs (AZ/) added five quarterback hurries, one and a half sacks and two and a half tackles for loss.
WNMU will return to action on the road this coming Saturday when they play at Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction, Colo., with kickoff set for 1 p.m.
