SILVER CITY, N.M. – Following an emotional road trip, the Western New Mexico football team will return home Saturday to host the Colorado School of Mines with kickoff set for 12 p.m. at Ben Altamirano Field.
The Mustangs (2-1, 1-0 RMAC) fought through a burning bus and a one-point deficit in the fourth quarter to come back and defeat Fort Lewis, 26-17, to open their RMAC slate of the season strong and help make a very rough trip more do able.
WNMU has been a second half team this season, outscoring opponents by 18.
Two Mustangs have tallied over 100 yards on the ground in
Daveon Barner (Long Beach, CA/Long Beach Polytechnic) (165) and
Abraham Macias (El Paso, TX/Socorro HS) (102). They have also combined for the three rushing touchdowns, with Macias tallying two.
In the passing game,
David Ingram (Irvine, CA/Woodbridge HS) has started all three games completing 54 passes for 725 yards with six touchdowns and three interceptions. He is also the third leading rusher on the team accumulating 39 yards on 28 attempts.
Markis Sumpter (Oceanside, CA/Fallbrook High School) has been the recipient of most of Ingram's passes, collecting 19 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns.
Ronnell Pompey (Los Angeles, CA/Fairfax Senior HS) has 10 catches for 178 yards and a touchdown. Salvadore Garcia has also posted over 100 yards, going for 113 yards on five receptions and one touchdown.
Bernard William leads the defense in total tackles (19) and interceptions (2), while also coming away with two tackles for loss.
The Orediggers (2-1, 0-1 RMAC) defeated the Mustangs, 43-0, last season, but were upset last weekend at home against New Mexico Highlands, falling, 40-34.
Colorado School of Mines has one top running threat in Dan Palmer who has gone for 386 yards on 61 attempts and eight touchdowns. Tevin Champagne has added 90 yards and one score.
Through the air, Clay Garcia has connected on 68-of-120 for 805 yards, six touchdowns and four interceptions.
Four receivers have accounted for over 100 yards through the air with Eric Shannon leading with 203 yards and two touchdowns.
Henry Kaetzer is the top stopper on defense, recording 20 total stops, three-and-a-half tackles for loss and two sacks.
CSM opened the season with victories over William Jewell (33-0) and South Dakota Mines and Technology (55-7).
