Solid doubles at No. 1 and 2 and then a comeback win at doubles No. 3, the Mustangs were well on their way to stomping over Division I Northern Arizona. The Mustangs then captured three wins in singles to best the Lumberjacks, 4-3.

"We are normally on a nine-point scoring system where all three doubles matches count as a point, and being up 3-0 on your opponents after doubles is a big boost, but in NCAA Division I, you have to win two of three doubles matches to win just one point,” says head coach Erik Burton. “So as a team, WNMU still had to come out and win three singles matches to win. It really changed the dynamics of a match, and NAU battled to the very end.”

Seated at No. 1 in singles, Emmanuel Mensah (Accra, Ghana, ITF Center Home, Mt. San Jacinto College) ended up clinching the final fourth point for the Mustangs and the win. He defeated Hugo Ramadier in the third set tiebreaker (5-7, 6-1, 7-6 (4)). Mensah also won at No. 1 doubles with partner Johan Weich (Landskrona, Sweden/Filbornaskolan High School) (8-6).

The other Mustangs sweeping the competition Saturday was Yair Banuelos (Mexico City, Mexico, Universidal del Valle de Mexico, Riverside Community College) and Henning Thrien (Gelsenkirchen, Germany, Carl Friedrick Gaus Gymnasium, Hope International University). The pair won their doubles competition quite easily, 8-3, and then both defeated their opponents in two-straight sets.
