WNMU has now made it four in a row. On Sunday, the men's tennis team edged past Grand Canyon, 5-4. The Lopes recently defeated Northern Arizona. This is a huge boost for WNMU as the purple and gold faces Northern Arizona next weekend.
On Sunday, WNMU's lineup was back to normal. WNMU came close to sweeping doubles, but at No. 1, the chance slipped away at 6-6 when the Lopes broke WNMU's serve. At No. 2,
Henning Thrien (Gelsenkirchen, Germany, Carl Friedrick Gaus Gymnasium, Hope International University) and
Yair Banuelos (Mexico City, Mexico, Universidal del Valle de Mexico, Riverside Community College) easily cruised past their competition, 8-1.
In singles, the Mustangs got wins at No. 1, 5, and 6.
Emmanuel Mensah (Accra, Ghana, ITF Center Home, Mt. San Jacinto College), who has played No. 1 in all five matches so far this season, won his match with a pair of 6-3.
Rodrigo Almeida (Arapongas, Brazil, Nene Lourenco High School) and
Jean Benoit Belin (Nimes, France, Emmanuel d'Alzon High School) were the other two Mustangs that recorded a point for the victory.
"I think the best performances came from Mensah, Almeida, and Belin,” comments head coach Erik Burton. “They deserve applause for a strong three matches. We have a very deep team, and I really think that is what helped us win on GCU's courts today.”
