SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Western New Mexico University football team will welcome Western State for Homecoming this Saturday with kickoff set for 1 p.m. inside Ben Altamirano Field.
Western State (1-4, 1-2 RMAC) is coming off of their first victory of the season having defeated then undefeated New Mexico Highlands, 15-14, on a last-second field goal this past Saturday in Gunnison.
The Mountaineers are winless on the road (0-2), having lost to FCS Idaho State (44-7) and Nebraska-Kearney (55-14).
Germaine Daniels is the main running back for WSC, having collected 317 yards on 111 attempts. WSC as a team has tallied 234 rushing yards, while opponents have rolled up 1,001 yards.
Passing-wise, Jamie Jensen has seen a majority of the snaps, having connected on 64-of-154 passes for 767 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions. Miles Gorham has also taken a few snaps at quarterback, completing 14-of-35 passes for 125 yards and one score.
On the receiving end, Curtis Prock and Kurtis Dunbar are both near 200 yards, with Prock coming away with 195 yards on 17 receptions and three touchdowns, while Dunbar has 190 yards on 16 receptions and one touchdown. Carter Murphey (137) and Daniels (105) are both over 100 yards to give the Mountaineers four receivers over the century mark.
Defensively, Jaden Terry leads the team with 43 tackles, 25 solo, along with one-and-a-half tackles for loss and a half sack. Johnny Pieper leads the team in sacks with three-and-a-half, while Adam Turner leads the team in interceptions with two.
The Mustangs defeated WSC, 25-7, last year in Gunnison. WNMU outgained WSC, 369-233 in total yards, while the Mountaineers turned the ball over three times to two for the Mustangs.
WNMU (3-2, 2-1 RMAC) is coming off a win against Colorado Mesa, 33-21, on the road last week.
Abraham Macias (El Paso, TX/Socorro HS) leads the ground attack, chewing up 264 yards on 41 carries, along with three touchdowns.
Daveon Barner (Long Beach, CA/Long Beach Polytechnic) is also over 100 yards, racking up 185 yards on 60 carries and two scores. As a team, the Mustangs have 493 yards rushing to 663 for opponents.
The air attack is powered by
David Ingram (Irvine, CA/Woodbridge HS), as he has thrown 190 times, completing 110 for 1,260 yards, 10 touchdowns and six interceptions. Catching the passes and leading the way is
Markis Sumpter (Oceanside, CA/Fallbrook High School), as he has brought in 34 balls for 445 yards and five touchdowns.
Ronnell Pompey (Los Angeles, CA/Fairfax Senior HS) has added 329 yards on 24 receptions and two touchdowns, while
Salvador Garcia (Anthony, TX/Anthony HS) has chipped in with 154 yards on nine receptions and one touchdown.
Dashaun Briggs (AZ/) and
Jacob Cross (Bakersfield, CA/Centennial HS) have caused havoc on opposing quarterbacks this year, with both collecting 37 total tackles. Briggs also has eight-and-a-half tackles for loss, four-and-a-half sacks, six quarterback hurries, one forced fumble and recovery. Cross has added three-and-a-half tackles for loss, one sack and a forced fumble.
Anthony Phillips (Houston, TX/Dobie HS) and Bernard Williams lead the team in interceptions, as both have come away with two so far this season.
Western State College and Western New Mexico will kickoff at around 1 p.m. Also, make sure to stick around for halftime, as Cornelius “Pat” Patterson will be inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame, along with two Alumni members and the Homecoming Court will be announced.
