Mustang Fire Fizzles In Second Half

Sophomore Chad Carter
The two big RMAC wins on Sunday and Monday seemed to be a big boost for the purple and gold. The Mustangs caught the Colorado Buffs by surprise. WNMU kicked off their last Division I game of the season on fire. The Mustangs led by 12 points, 18-6, six minutes into the game.

The big lead forced the Buffs to make many unexpected early starter substitutions. The Mustang lead didn't hold, however, as the Buffs crept back into the game and held their first lead with seven minutes left to play in the first half with a 19-6 run. By intermission, the Buffs were up by eight, 44-46.

CU opened the second half with a 13-6 run and took a 17-point lead, 57-40, although Western New Mexico would not be pushed to the wayside. The Mustangs pulled within nine, 60-51, on a layup by Chad Carter (Tucson, AZ, Ironwood Ridge High School) with 11:57 to play. The Buffs restored their double-figure lead with a pair of free throws right after and held it until the final buzzer when the scoreboard read 92-70.

TJ Riley (Tyler, TX, Chapel Hill High School, Lamar University) and Carter were the Mustangs' top scorers with 20 and 18 points respectively. Carter also had a team-high seven rebounds. As a team, WNMU, now and 5-10 on the season, shot .403 from the floor and .316 from the arc.

Alec Burks topped CU with 20 points, followed by Cory Higgins with 15, Levi Knutson and Marcus Relphorde with 13 each and Andre Roberson with 12. Roberson also added 12 rebounds. CU is 11-4 overall on the season.
