After five hours of battle, the Mustangs defeated the No. 27 BYU-Hawaii Seasiders, 5-4. WNMU got off to a great start in doubles, earning two wins from a pair of partners. Then the Seasiders were forced to play a man short and default one singles and one doubles match. WNMU got one more point on the singles side to topple BYU-Hawaii.
Newcomers
Yair Banuelos (Mexico City, Mexico, Universidal del Valle de Mexico, Riverside Community College) and
Henning Thrien (Gelsenkirchen, Germany, Carl Friedrick Gaus Gymnasium, Hope International University) scored an 8-5 win at number one doubles.
Flavio Rueda (Mazatlan, Mexico, Universidad Autonoma de Durango, Riverside Community College) and
Kyle Lynch (Albuquerque, NM, New Mexico Military Institute High School) came behind from a 5-2 deficit and were able to win in an 8-6 decision.
The singles matches were very difficult to come by for WNMU, but with a little luck and an extreme competitive spirit, Thrien, at the No. 3 spot, came up with the clinch win versus Diego Miranda, 5-4.
“I experienced some of the best effort and intense competitive environment WNMU tennis has seen in my coaching experience here,” says head coach Erik Burton. “It was amazing to watch. Every court was a battle, and that is what we need from our program this year."
