The Mustangs strung together two straight wins Saturday with a victory over Western State, 25-7. WNMU is now .500 on the season (3-3) and also even in RMAC play (2-2).
Kevin Breaker (Stockton, CA, Lincoln High School, Delta College) had a sensational day with 22 carries, 153 yards, and two touchdowns. He averaged 7.0 yards per rush. As a team, WNMU finished with 253 yards on the ground and 116 in the air courtesy of
Chris Voller (Albuquerque, NM, Valley High School).
The only other Mustang to produce more yardage than Breaker and Voller was
Salvador Garcia (Anthony, TX, Anthony High School). On five punt returns, he returned it 70 yards, and on two kickoffs, he posted 46 yards. He also had four receptions for 38 yards to finish with 152 all purpose yards.
WNMU's defense put a hurt on the Mountaineers. First, they limited the other Western to just 233 total offensive yards. The “D” also had three sacks for 13 yards and eight tackles for a loss. For the second week in a row,
Jacob Cross (Bakersfield, CA, Centennial High School, Bakersfield Junior College) led statistically with nine tackles.
Anthony Phillips (Houston, TX, Dobie High School) recorded seven tackles, two which were for a loss.
Mitch Knoy (Bakersfield, CA, Bakersfield High School, Bakersfield Junior College) notched six stops with 2.5 sacks for nine yards.
The Mountaineers started the game with the ball on their own 35-yard line and quickly made their way downfield. With a first and goal on the WNMU 8, Bradey Gasaway carried the ball back-to-back to land the Mountaineers on the three-yard line. On third down, they decided to go to the air, but WNMU's Cross got in the way. He snatched the ball in the end zone to prevent the Mountaineer score. WNMU got the ball on their own 20.
Just like the Mountaineers, Voller and Breaker quickly marched the ball downfield in 12 plays and in 3:34. But unlike the Mountaineers, they kept the ball on the ground in the final few yards. Breaker capped off the drive with a two-yard dash to tack on the first six points.
Kameron Drawhorn's (San Diego, CA, Fallbrook High School) point-after was good. The Mustangs were up, 7-0, after the first quarter.
WNMU tacked on another touchdown midway through the second quarter. Voller connected with
Spencer Johnston (Ramona, CA, Ramona High School) for six yards. Drawhorn's kick was blocked, however, by Ryan Walstrom to hold the score at 13-0.
After the half, WNMU came out a bit sluggish. Three plays in, WNMU coughed up the ball on their own 28-yard line to give the Mountaineers great field position. It took just three plays to find Shaun Suttorp in the back corner. The purple and gold still held a six-point advantage, however, 13-7.
Solid defense held the score at 13-7 until WNMU's first drive of the final quarter. Overall, the Mountaineers were 7 of 16 on third-down conversions. The Mountaineers took a chance on punting the ball to WNMU's Garcia. Garcia returned the pigskin 26 yards to the WNMU 40. A personal foul on the home team gave the Mustangs even better field position. Breaker and
Ronnell Pompey (Los Angeles, CA, Fairfax Senior High School) combined for 45 yards with Breaker getting the ball at the end of the drive for a 19-yard touchdown, his second of the day. Drawhorn seemed to be a bit shaken after his last point after attempt was blocked as this attempt was no good, but it didn't matter because the Mountaineers could not put up anymore points.
WNMU put up an insurance touchdown with 5:46 left to play.
Mario Wren (Bessemer, AL, Bessemer City High School) rushed for 51 yards and his second touchdown of his collegiate career. Drawhorn failed to get his final kick through the uprights to end the game at 25-7.
