The Mustangs did not have a single turnover at Chadron State on their homecoming– the first time WNMU has had an error-free game all season. It still wasn't enough to get past the Chadron State Eagles. WNMU fell, 31-7, to drop to 3-5 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
Chadron showed their overall dominance by limiting the WNMU offense to just 183 yards on the day while putting up 493 yards of their own. Chadron also had the ball nearly 20 minutes more than the purple and gold.
For the Mustangs, senior
Kevin Breaker (Stockton, CA, Lincoln High School, Delta College) produced over half of the WNMU yardage off of his 16 carries. He went 98 yards and averaged 6.1 yards per carry. He also tacked on one reception for nine yards. Quarterback
Chris Voller (Albuquerque, NM, Valley High School) threw for 79 yards (8-22-0) but was sacked three times in the process.
Chadron's running back, Glen Clinton, registered one less yard than the entire WNMU offense. He posted two touchdowns and 182 yards.
Defensively, WNMU's
Derrick Perrault (San Diego, CA, Helix High School, Southwestern College) had his best performance of the season with seven solo tackles and five assists.
Terron Sumpter, Jr. (Fallbrook, CA, Fallbrook High School) and
Cooper Bowman (Los Lunas, NM, Los Lunas High School, University of New Mexico) each recorded an interception.
WNMU began the day with a big defensive stop on Chadron's opening drive. With the Eagles on the WNMU38 after six plays, Sumpter snatched the ball out of the air on the 13-yard line and ran it back 41 yards. The Mustangs, in turn, were in solid field position, but a quick 3-and-out gave the ball right back to Chadron. The limited WNMU offense led to Chadron's first touchdown of the day with 3:38 left to play in the first quarter.
WNMU's ensuing drive started out strong again. Breaker rushed for 54 yards to the CSC19 on the first call at the scrimmage line. Voller then got the Mustangs to the a first-and-goal on the four-yard line, but Chadron's defense held like a brick wall at the one-yard line to take the ball back on downs.
The score held at 7-0 Eagles until 4:03 was left on the clock in the second quarter. After 13 plays and 88 yards, Chadron State finally capped off the possession with an 18-yard touchdown run by Dominic Morris.
After the extended homecoming halftime, it was the Chadron State Glen Clinton show. Clinton carried the ball eight out of the next nine plays in Chadron's top drive of the second half. Clinton finally found the end zone to stretch the Eagle lead to 21-0.
WNMU remained limited on what they could do offensively. The next five possessions were held to just 44 yards while Chadron tacked on a field goal in the closing minutes of the third quarter and a touchdown in the top of the fourth.
The Mustangs finally got on the board after the Bowman interception with 9:04 left to play in the game. Voller connected with
CJ Gardner (Safford, AZ, Safford High School, Arizona State University) in the end zone for a 14-yard reception.
WNMU will be at home next weekend to take on the University of Nebraska – Kearney. Kickoff is set for 12:00 noon.
