Western State Knocks Off WNMU

Sophomore Salvador Garcia
The Mustangs couldn't snap their two-game losing streak Saturday afternoon versus Western State College. WNMU dropped their third game in a row, 38-19, as they couldn't stop the Mountaineer offense. Western State more than doubled the Mustangs' total offensive output with 560 yards.

With injuries both on the offensive and defensive side of the ball, WNMU found it difficult to move ahead of the Mountaineers. WNMU never led in the game as Western State got on the board right away on their opening drive. Quarterback Tyler Daniels rushed for 74 yards. Three plays later Daniels handed the ball to Germaine Daniels for a seven-yard rushing touchdown.

Western State tacked on seven more points with 7:07 left on the clock in the first quarter. DeMorris Brooks forced a WNMU fumble on the WSC 23. Daniels then connected with Ryan Heagle for a 60-yard touchdown.

The Mustang defense finally stopped the Mountaineers on WSC's possession at the end of the first quarter. A poor Western State punt gave WNMU great field position on the WSC 35. Junior Kevin Breaker (Stockton, CA, Lincoln High School, Delta College) then posted two rushes for the 35 yards and the touchdown. The first quarter ended with the Mustangs down by a touchdown.

Western State had an opportunity to post a field goal at the top of the second quarter, but WNMU's Justin Hunt (Aiea, HI, Aiea High School, Mt. San Antonio College) put his hand up in the air to block the field goal. The Mustangs sat on the WNMU 47. Three plays and minus eight yards gave the ball right back to the Mountaineers. The red and white ran 3:52 off the clock and recorded seven more points with 7:22 left to play in the half. Neither team scored in the final minutes of the half. The Mustangs were down, 21-7, at intermission.

A long drive to open up the third quarter led to the fourth touchdown of the day for the Mountaineers. WSC ran 16 plays and went 77 yards in 10 minutes and five seconds to go up by 21.

WNMU head coach Bernie Busken thought a change was necessary towards the end of the third quarter. Quarterback Cody House (Tucson, AZ, Cholla High School, Pima Community College) came in to replace Chris Voller (Albuquerque, NM, Valley High School). House got the Mustangs to the WSC 10-yard line but got stuck in the red zone as the Mustangs handed the ball over on downs at the top of the fourth quarter. This then led to a Western State field goal.

Finally, the Mustangs put six points on the scoreboard midway through the fourth quarter. House threw for 50 yards on the drive and eventually found Christopher Miranda (Peoria, AZ, Peoria High School, Phoenix Community College) for the seven-yard touchdown. A two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful. The Mustangs were now down, 31-13.

It only took 14 seconds for Western State's Daniels to find a hole in the WNMU defense. Daniels went 56 yards for his first rushing touchdown of the day.

House inked one more touchdown with 2:29 left to play, but Western State ran out the clock to end the game.

Voller started the game as quarterback, completing 7 of 18 passes and throwing one interception. He finished with 67 yards. He also posted 37 rushing yards. House finished the match-up with 13 completed passes on 23 attempts, good for 132 yards.

Salvador Garcia (Anthony, TX, Anthony High School) played as well as he has been all season. He recorded 227 all-purpose yards. On kick-off returns, he had 136 yards with his longest being 43 yards.

WSC's Daniels finished with 182 yards rushing and 299 yards throwing, but he was sacked five separate times. Roland Foumai (Aiea, HI, Aiea High School, Mt. San Antonio College) tallied two of those sacks for 12 yards. Joseph Faifili (Laie, HI, Kahuku High School, Eastern Arizona College) led all players with 11 total tackles.
